Steve Beresford (born March 6, 1950 in Wellington (Shropshire) ) is a British jazz pianist and composer who also plays trumpet , euphonium , double bass and other instruments.

Live and act

Beresford began playing the piano at the age of seven and played the trumpet as a teenager. He studied at the University of York and during this time formed a duo with Han Bennink . He was also involved in the theater scene, played the Hammond organ in a soul band and was involved in Trevor Wishart's recording Journey Into Space (1973). In 1974 he moved to London , where he performed with Derek Bailey's Company . With Nigel Coombes and Roger Smith he formed the group Three Pullovers in 1975 , which was active in the field of new improvisation music. In 1977 he founded the improvisation ensemble Alterations with David Toop , Terry Day and Peter Cusack . He also played with Eugene Chadbourne , Gavin Bryars and Brian Eno .

In 1981 he appeared as a solo pianist at the Holland Festival . During this time he also played with The Slits and founded the trio The Melody Four with Lol Coxhill and Tony Coe , with which he mainly chose hits and television music as the starting material for humorous improvisations. He also performed with Alfred Harth in the band Gestalt et Jive and worked with John Zorn , Butch Morris , Otomo Yoshihide , Evan Parker and Michel Doneda on the one hand, and Frank Chickens , Ted Milton , Jah Wobble and The Flying Lizards on the other . He is a member of the London Improvisers Orchestra and works with numerous musicians from the British improvisation scene such as Roger Turner and John Russell .

Beresford also wrote numerous film scores .
