David Toop (born May 5, 1949 in Enfield , Middlesex ) is a British musician , writer , music journalist and curator .

Life

Toop, who was born in Enfield, moved with his parents to Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire shortly after his birth , where he also grew up. Toop learned to play the guitar at the age of eleven by first copying the music of well-known instrumental rock bands such as The Shadows and The Ventures . He was later influenced by blues musicians like Buddy Guy and Bo Diddley , according to his own information . In his first band, founded in 1964, Toop took over the lead guitar and initially only played cover versions of well-known R&B and blues pieces. Another blues band founded by Toop broke up in 1967 after only one appearance. After Toop left Grammar School in 1967 , he began studying art and graphic design at Hornsey College of Art and Watford College of Art and Design. However, he broke off his studies in Watford after a year in order to return to painting in Hornsey.

Together with the drummer Paul Burwell and the singer Simon Finn, Toop recorded an album entitled Pass the distance in 1970 . However, the album was taken off the market after a few weeks to avoid a lawsuit from a shoe manufacturer whose advertisement Toop had copied for the cover. After several unsuccessful attempts to found music groups, Toop and Burwell formed a duo, called themselves Rain in the Face and dedicated themselves primarily to experimental music influenced by Sun Ra , Han Bennink and Olivier Messiaen .

In addition to his own band projects, Toop devoted himself increasingly to writing. He dealt with ethno , bioacoustics , shamanism and language / languages . After his first writings on music theory such as “ Decomposition As Music Process ” (1972) and “ The Bi / s / onics Pieces ” (1973), his book “ New / Rediscovered Musical Instruments ” was published in 1975 . After this book, Toop was asked by Brian Eno to record a record of the same name with Max Eastley for Eno's newly founded label Obscure. This was followed by work for the British BBC , which produced several radio shows with Toop. In 1976 and 1978 Toop worked for the artist John Latham in the London Zoo, where he recorded animal noises and dealt increasingly with topics such as bioacoustics and communication. These works were later exhibited in London at the ICA and the Whitechapel Art Gallery . In 1977 he founded the improvisation ensemble Alterations with Steve Beresford , Terry Day and Peter Cusack .

From the late 1970s, Toop released several albums on his own label Quartz. His work with the group The Flying Lizards resulted in Charthit TV presenting the Toop with his bandmates at the chart show Top of the Pops . In the 1980s Toop founded the music magazine Collusions and produced the synth-pop band The Frank Chickens . In 1984 he traveled to New York City to do research for a book on the history of hip-hop culture and music . The work entitled " Rap Attack: African Jive to New York Hip Hop " was published in the same year and is now considered the standard work in hip-hop history. Two updated and supplemented sequels appeared.

In 1998 Toop composed the soundtrack for the underwater show entitled Acqua Matrix , which ended every evening at the 1998 Expo in Lisbon.

In his long career, Toop has worked with numerous musicians such as John Zorn , Prince Far I , Jon Hassell , Derek Bailey , Talvin Singh , Evan Parker , Scanner , Ivor Cutler , Haruomi Hosono , Jin Hi Kim and Bill Laswell and other artists such as theater director Steven Berkoff , the butoh dancer Mitsutaka Ishii , the poet Bob Cobbing and the writer Jeff Noon .

Toop continued to work as a critic and columnist for numerous newspapers and magazines such as The Wire , The Face , The Times , The Sunday Times , The Guardian , Vogue , Spin , GQ , The New York Times and The Village Voice .

In 2000 he curated the Sonic Boom exhibition , Britain’s largest sound art exhibition to date , which was on view at the Hayward Gallery in London. In 2001 and 2002 Toop Sound was curator of the Radical Fashion exhibition , which featured works by designers Issey Miyake , Junya Watanabe , Martin Margiela and Hussein Chalayan , and of Toop Music by Björk , Ryuichi Sakamoto , Akira Rabelais, among others and Paul Schütze presented.
