Paul Lovens
Paul Lovens (born June 6, 1949 in Aachen ) is a German drummer.
Live and act
Lovens is self-taught as a musician and has played in bands since he was 14, first Dixieland and dance music , then other genres of jazz . As a touring musician, he has been internationally active for more than 50 years and can be heard on countless recordings. In 1969 he focused on free play. Since 1970 he has played continuously in the trio with Alexander von Schlippenbach (piano) and Evan Parker (saxophone) and in the Globe Unity Orchestra . In particular in small groups he continues to work with numerous relevant musicians from the European free music scene, but was also a member of the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra . He was part of the core formation of Günter Christmann's VARIO projects and played with Cecil Taylor . With Rüdiger Carl , Hans Reichel and Shelley Hirsch he formed the September band .
In 1976 he founded his own record label Po Torch with Paul Lytton , on which it was released until 1993 (including three duo albums by the two drummers). In 2014 he received a practical scholarship at Villa Massimo in Rome. Lovens lives in Aachen and Nickelsdorf . In 2019 he was awarded the Albert Mangelsdorff Prize 2019 for his musical work as a “prototype of an improvisational musician with inventive talent who redefined genre boundaries and is currently in top form in a team” .
