JAPO Records was a West German Jazz - record label , that of Karl Egger was founded and consisted 1970-1985. The sister label of ECM produced and released a total of 41 long-playing records ranging from fusion to improvisational music, most of them by European artists. The label, which emerged from the mail order business “Jazz by Post” (whose abbreviation was the label name), was based in Munich .

Albums by Mal Waldron , Dollar Brand , Barre Phillips , Herbert Joos , Edward Vesala , Jiří Stivín & Rudolf Dašek , Tom van der Geld , Enrico Rava , Manfred Schoof , Stephan Micus , the Globe Unity Orchestra , OM , Lennart Åberg , George Gruntz , Barry Guy , Elton Dean , Peter Warren , Alfred Harth , Heiner Goebbels , Paul Lovens , Michael Jüllich , Alois Kott , Evert Brettschneider , Christy Doran , AMM and Klaus Koenig . Production for the label was carried out by musicians and established producers such as Steve Lake , Jack DeJohnette , Manfred Eicher and Håken Elmquist , with Thomas Stöwsand overseeing most of the projects . The sound engineers included a. Martin Wieland and Jan Erik Kongshaug , who also worked intensively for the sister label ECM during this time. Other sound engineers were Klaus Bornemann, Carlos Albrecht, Lars Vester Petersen, Eddie Korvin, Biff Dawes, Harry Bergman, Tom Mark and Jean Deloron. Recordings such as Bobby Naughton's album were also licensed from America.

The productions in the JAPO catalog appeared almost without exception in LP format; numerous titles have been re-released as compact discs on other labels.
