Tom van der Money

Thomas "Tom" van der Geld (* 9. September 1947 in Boston ) is an American Malletspieler of modern jazz .

Van der Geld first played the piano and trumpet before he discovered the vibraphone . He studied at the University of New Mexico and then with Gary Burton at Berklee College of Music , which also gave him his doctorate. In 1971 he and Larry Porter founded the band Children at Play , which released several albums (including for JAPO ) and gave concerts (also in Germany) that delighted critics and audiences. He then released the album "Path" (1979) with Children at Play colleague Roger Janotta and guitarist Bill Connors . Van der Geld continued to work with the WDR Big Band Cologne , with Manfred Schoof , with the group Between and with Kenny Wheeler ; he also appeared in a trio with Sigi Busch and Jo Thönes as well as with Luis de Mateo, Edward Vesala , Barre Phillips , Albert Mangelsdorff , Mel Lewis , Peter Herbolzheimer and Frank Haunschild .

Van der Geld has been working in Europe since 1974. Until his retirement he was professor for jazz ear training, jazz harmony, jazz improvisation, ensemble and jazz vibraphone at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim .
