Henry Dennis Hodgetts (born November 28, 1863 in Birmingham , † March 26, 1945 ibid) was an English football player . The left winger was a two-time English cup winner and champion with Aston Villa between 1888 and 1896 .

Athletic career

After initial football experience for the teams at The Dreadnought, Birmingham St. George's and Great Lever, Hodgetts joined Aston Villa in 1886. The club was at that time a dominant force in English football and already in its first season 1886/87, Hodgetts moved to the FA Cup finals after victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Glasgow Rangers with the "Villans" . Opponents and local rivals West Bromwich Albion were the better team there in the first half, until left winger Hodgetts made the opening goal himself in the second half after his right counterpart Richmond Davis provided the preparation with a cross. After another goal from team captain Archie Hunter in the last minute of the game, Hodgetts won the game with Aston Villa 2-0. In addition to the cup success, he took part in his first three international matches for England between February and March 1888 and clearly won the games against Wales (5: 1), Scotland (5: 0) and Ireland (5: 1).

In the first season of the Football League 1888/89 Hodgetts won the runner-up, but from then on the sporting performance curve showed a slight downward trend. It was not until 1892 that he reached the FA Cup final with Villa again, which was now lost 3-0 to the WBA. After a fourth place in the 1892/93 season , Hodgetts won his first English championship in the following season . He scored twelve of the club's 84 league goals, making it Aston Villa's second-best goalscorer behind John Devey . On March 3, 1894, Hodgetts came to his sixth and last appearance for England and remained in the 2-2 against Ireland for the first time without a win. Hodgetts won his second FA Cup in 1895 with Aston Villa, where the old rival from West Bromwich was defeated again - Bob Chatt scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 after just 30 seconds. It followed Hodgett's second English championship the following year, after which he left the club in August 1896 after a total of 91 goals in 215 games. He finally let his career end with local rivals Small Heath - later known as "Birmingham City".

Aston Villa's club history ("Who's Who of Aston Villa") described Hodgetts retrospectively as a powerful footballer who preferred to play on the left wing. He was a crowd favorite and was one of the club's top players, thanks to his well-groomed mustache and parting, even off the field. He is described as having both feet and creativity, was difficult to separate from the ball and had a hard shot.

After the active career

Hodgetts moved to the coaching staff of Small Heath in 1899, but after only one season went to his "middle-class" profession as an innkeeper. He later remained loyal to the former Aston Villa club as Vice President - a position he held until his death in 1945.
