Football League 1891/92

The Football League First Division 1892/93 was the fifth season of the highest English football league . It began on September 3, 1892, ended on April 17, 1893 and was the first season that after the introduction of a second division was no longer just Football League, but Football League First Division.

The AFC Sunderland defended last year's title and won with eleven points ahead of Preston North End , the second English championship in club history. All three newcomers from the previous year Nottingham Forest , Newton Heath and The Wednesday were able to receive the class. In the second-rate Second Division , however, Notts County and Accrington FC had to relegate , with Accrington then completely withdrawn from the game operations of the Football League. These two clubs were to be replaced in the following season by Sheffield United and Darwen FC .

A total of 332 players were used, with AFC Sunderland having the fewest with 15 and Everton FC having the most players in league games with 29. 135 newcomers opposed 122 footballers, who last came into play in the 1892/93 season. 30 players could play all 30 league games of their club.

    The Sunderland AFC championship team

The following list lists all players who played in a league game for Sunderland AFC during the 1892/93 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.

    "Test matches"

Before the automatic promotion and relegation rule between the first-class First Division and the second-rate Second Division, which first came into effect at the end of the 1898/99 season, potential promoters from the Second Division had to prove themselves in play-off- like “test games”. Participation in the game was also dependent on an election procedure of the league association, which had to decide whether a club might participate. Also in the 1892/93 season there were test matches between the last three first division clubs Notts County, Accrington FC and Newton Heath as well as the best second division clubs Small Heath, Sheffield United and Darwen FC, from which Newton Heath, Sheffield United and Darwen FC as the sporting ones Winners emerged and then each secured a majority of the votes of the league association.
