The Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium ( Azerbaijani Tofiq Bəhramov Stadionu ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Baku . The full name of the sports facility is Tofiq Bəhramov adına Respublika Stadionu ( German  Republic Stadium named after Tofiq Bəhramov ). It holds 31,200 spectators and was the national stadium of Azerbaijan until the opening of the new national stadium in March 2015 . The FK Baku and Neftçi Baku carry their games from here also the FK Qarabağ Agdam its international matches in the UEFA Europa League . Until 2015, the stadium was also the venue for Azerbaijan's qualifying matches for the World Cup and the European Football Championship .

history

Construction began in 1939, but World War II delayed construction. After the war, German prisoners of war continued to build the stadium. The venue was inaugurated twelve years after the start of construction on September 16, 1951 under the name Josef Stalin Stadium . In the course of de-Stalinization in 1956 it was named the Vladimir Lenin Stadium .

Since 1993 it has been named after Azerbaijan-born Soviet football referee Tofiq Bəhramov , who died in the same year. Bəhramov achieved fame as the linesman in the finals of the 1966 World Cup in London between hosts England and Germany . He became known through the " Wembley goal " by Geoff Hurst, which he recognized as a regular in the above game . In front of the stadium is a statue of Tofiq Bəhramov, unveiled by Geoff Hurst, Michel Platini and FIFA President Sepp Blatter .

From 2011 to 2012, the facility for ten million Azerbaijan manats (AZN) underwent extensive renovation and expansion. In addition to the complete roofing of the stands and the replacement of the seating, the rooms such as the changing rooms, referee booths, showers, sanitary facilities , medical rooms and the area for doping tests were renovated and brought up to date. The old masts of the old floodlight system were dismantled and replaced by a system integrated into the roof. The stadium received underfloor heating and a modern drainage system for the pitch, a video surveillance system , a modernized VIP stand and a restaurant with 205 seats. On August 16, 2012, the Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium was reopened by President İlham Əliyev .

The stadium was a candidate for hosting the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest , which then took place in the Baku Crystal Hall . As one of the stadiums for the 2012 U-17 Women's World Cup , the stadium hosted the final between France and North Korea.
