The Neftçi Peşəkar Futbol Klubu , known in German-speaking countries as Neftçi Baku , is a football club from Baku , the capital of Azerbaijan .

history

The association was founded in 1937 under the name Neftjanik and received its current name in 1968, although at that time it was still written in Cyrillic. In the times of the Soviet Union , the club was the most successful Azerbaijani club, Neftçi spent a total of 27 seasons in the first division . A title could never be won, however, a third place in 1966 was the greatest success. In 1988 Neftçi was relegated for the last time in the history of the Soviet league and spent the time in the Pervaya League until 1991 . When the Soviet Union and with it its football leagues were dissolved, the Azerbaijani Premyer Liqası was founded. In this new national league Neftçi became one of the dominant clubs. The club won the Azerbaijani championship title in 1992, 1996, 1997, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Another great success was winning the CIS Cup in 2006 .

In 2012/13 the club started as champions in qualifying for the UEFA Champions League . After you could eliminate the FC Sestaponi (2nd qualifying round), you were eliminated by Hapoel Ironi Kirjat Schmona in the third qualifying round. In the relegation to the Europa League , Baku achieved a sensation when APOEL Nicosia , last year's quarter-finalist in the Champions League, was eliminated. Baku is the first Azerbaijani team to take part in the group stage of the Europa League and is also the first Azerbaijani team to take part in the group stage of a European Cup competition.
