life and career

Əsgər Abdullayev was born in Baku in 1960. The defender began playing football for Neftçi Baku , a Soviet first division team at the time . From 1979 he was on their first team. Abdullayev spent his entire career at Neftçi, including when the club was relegated to the Pervaya League in 1988 . When the Soviet Union finally dissolved in 1991, he now played with Neftçi in the newly founded Azerbaijani first division of Azerbaijan. He played 319 games in the Soviet league, the remaining 49 in the Azerbaijani league.

As a coach, he initially looked after FK Şəfa Baku from 1998 to 2001 . He then coached the Azerbaijani U-21 national team before taking over the Azerbaijani senior team for a few years. This was followed by positions at FK Baku (2005–2005) and Olimpik-Şüvəlan Baku (2006–2009). Abdullayev last worked for PFK Turan Tovuz in 2011 .
