Nikola "Jura" Jurčević (born September 14, 1966 in Zagreb ) is a former Croatian football player and current coach .
Player career
Jurčević started his career at Dinamo Zagreb and played there with his intimate friends Robert Prosinečki and Zvonko Boban , who later made careers at AC Milan and Real Madrid . In addition to his two team-mates, Jurčević was then considered the greatest talent at Dinamo and one of the greatest hopes of Yugoslav football at all. After a conflict with Dinamo's junior coach Beljin, Jura moved to Royal Antwerp at the age of 18 . After a moderately successful year in Belgium , the Croat returned home and played for city rivals FC Zagreb from then on .
In the summer of 1991 Jurčević moved to his second station abroad and signed with the Austrian Bundesliga club SV Austria Salzburg . In Salzburg , the trained striker was soon celebrated as the whirlwind of the Balkans due to his final and assistant skills . He won the Austrian championship with Salzburg in 1994 and 1995, and in 1994 he won the title of Austrian top scorer with 14 goals this season together with his club colleague Heimo Pfeifenberger . "Jura", as it was called by Salzburg's fans, celebrated its greatest success when it reached the UEFA Cup final with the Salzburg team in the 1993/94 season, which was only just lost to Inter Milan . Another success was the entry into the UEFA Champions League in the following season .
After his successful guest appearance in Austria, he moved to SC Freiburg in the German Bundesliga for two years . There he came on 45 missions and scored 5 goals for the Breisgauer. After his stay in Germany, he went back to Salzburg for a year.
Jura took part with the Croatian national football team in the 1996 European Championship in England , where he played three games and received a yellow card. He played a total of 19 international matches in his career, in which he scored two goals.
Coaching career
Jurčević began his coaching career in 2003 at his home club Dinamo Zagreb . After a moderately successful premiere as coach Dinamos, he finally started his second coaching position in 2005 at his former club SV Austria Salzburg . After the club was taken over by Red Bull , Jura was replaced as coach by Manfred Linzmaier after just two games . From August 19, 2005 he coached the Croatian first division club NK Slaven Belupo Koprivnica . From 2006 to 2017 Jurčević was assistant to the former Croatian national coach Slaven Bilić, who has coached West Ham United since 2015 . Between March and May 2018 he was head coach at Dinamo Zagreb. Jurčević coached the Azerbaijan national team from May 11, 2018 to December 13, 2019 .
