Christoph "Gischi" Westerthaler (born January 11, 1965 in Silz ; † July 20, 2018 in Horn ) was an Austrian football player and coach . He played in the position of the striker . He was married to Astrid Westerthaler and the father of four children.
Career as a player
society
Westerthaler began his career in his hometown with SPG Silz / Mötz. In 1983 he came to the Bundesliga club SSW Innsbruck . He made his debut in the top division in October 1983 against SK Austria Klagenfurt . In 1986 he moved to league competitor LASK .
For the 1988/89 season he returned to Tyrol, where he joined FC Swarovski . With Swarovski, he became champions in 1989 and 1990 and also top scorer in 1992 with 17 goals. After Wacker Innsbruck took over Swarovski Tirol, Westerthaler continued to play with this club from 1992; even after the professional team was outsourced to FC Tirol Innsbruck in 1993, he stayed with the club.
In 1994 he started at SK Vorwärts Steyr , and in January 1996 he returned to LASK. In 1997 the striker moved abroad for the first time, to Cyprus to APOEL Nicosia . After half a year on the Mediterranean island, he went to Germany for the second division club Eintracht Frankfurt in January 1998 . With the Frankfurt team, he rose to the Bundesliga in the same season .
In January 2000 he moved within Frankfurt to the regional league team FSV . With the FSV he had to relegate to the league at the end of the season . From January 2001 Westerthaler played for the second division VfL Osnabrück , after the 2000/01 season he left the club. After a year break, he returned to Austria in 2002, to the third-class SPG Wattens-Wacker .
After the 2002/03 season, he ended his professional career. After his professional career ended, there were games at amateur level for lower-class clubs such as SV Völs and SV Ried iO
National team
Westerthaler made his debut in October 1989 against Malta for the Austrian national team . He played his last game for the national team in November 1993.
Career as a coach
Westerthaler began his career as assistant coach at FC Wacker Tirol . His first position as head coach was Innsbruck AC from 2005 . In 2007 he should have been coach of the Kazakh U-21 team , but the contract was terminated shortly after the appointment as coach and Westerthaler became the sporting director of SCR Altach .
From January 2008 to June of the same year he coached SV Völs, with whom he had to relegate to the regional league.
In January 2011 he became Michael Streiter's assistant coach at the regional division SV Horn . With the Hornern he was able to move up to the second division in 2012 . From 2013 he acted as co- founder of Willhelm Schuldes . In October 2014 Westerthaler finally became head coach at Horner. After he was relegated to the regional league with the club, he moved back to the second tier for the 2015/16 season, as assistant coach to Johann Kleer . After separating from Kleer in April 2016, Westerthaler temporarily took over the team on an interim basis.
As assistant coach of the new coach Masanori Hamayoshi , he was able to rise again to the second division. After the Lower Austrians separated from the Japanese, Westerthaler took over the post of head coach together with Nihad Pejković in May 2017 . The interim coaching duo worked until June 1, 2017, after which it was replaced by Carsten Jancker and released from further duties. Mid October 2017 changed Westerthaler alongside Kurt Garger to Chinese third division Yunnan Feihu FC . While Garger has since appeared as head coach, Westerthaler and Franz Weber were one of two co-coaches at Garger's side. He worked there until mid-May 2018.
