Austrian football championship 1973/74 | |
master | SK VÖEST Linz (1) |
Shooter king | Johann Krankl (36) |
The Austrian Football Championship 1973/74 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The regional leagues east ( Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland ), the regional leagues middle ( Upper Austria , Styria , Carinthia ) and the regional leagues west ( Salzburg , Tyrol , Vorarlberg ) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective national leagues of the federal states acted as the third performance level.
First performance level - national league
General
The championship in the national league was contested with 17 teams, each of which met twice during the entire season. SK VÖEST Linz was able to become Austrian football champions for the first time during the season ; Defending champion SSW Innsbruck (syndicate between Wacker Innsbruck and WSG Wattens) became runner-up. As Austrian champions, VÖEST Linz qualified for the 1975 European Cup , where the club was eliminated in the first round. The syndicate between Vienna AC and Austria was allowed to take part in the 1975 European Cup , where the team reached the round of 16. Sturm Graz, SSW Innsbruck and Rapid Wien represented Austria's football in the 1974/75 UEFA Cup ; Sturm Graz and SSW Innsbruck failed in round 1, Rapid reached the round of 32.
Sporty
The 1974 championship had a surprise winner with the VÖEST Linz factory club. With Helmut Senekowitsch, the club had the youngest coach in the Bundesliga and was also the youngest club itself: the title was won for “only” the 30th anniversary of the club. The team with a few stars and only two national players was able to succeed thanks to its unity in front of the defending game community Wattens-Wacker Innsbruck. The decision was only made when the Tyroleans fell in the last round at Sturm Graz (0-0), who would have been impossible to catch if they had won. A 2-0 win at home against Vienna was enough for the Linzers to win the title. Record champion Rapid was also involved in the fight for the title thanks to his new young goalgetter Hans Krankl . The striker was awarded the top scorer with 36 goals and the second top scorer in Europe with the silver shoe . His personal highlight was certainly the derby against Austria on April 12, 1974, when he scored all four Rapid goals in the 4-0.
Game abandoned in the "great Viennese derby"
In the floodlit match from 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 1973, in the Prater Stadium near Austria / WAC against Rapid, the Viennese referee Paul Schiller aborted it in the 80th minute of the game. The match had started half an hour late due to a cable fire and therefore floodlights. Rapid had taken the lead in the 36th minute through a penalty from Bernd Lorenz , when Helmut Weigl equalized in the 80th minute, spectators penetrated the field. The stewardship, including the police, was unable to get the audience out, and a police spokesman said that the majority of these people were young people and that "more riots would have been provoked had they been used with indomitable violence". The ÖFB bodies decided to repeat the match, which happened on December 1st, with Austria winning 3-1.
The game was also canceled in the 22nd round on March 21, 1974 in the match between Donawitzer SV Alpine and SpG WSG Radenthein - Villacher SV in the 82nd minute when the home team was 4-0. A drunken Donawitzer supporter had thrown stones at the assistant referee Günther Bind, so that he suffered a slight head injury, whereupon referee Herbert Loidl from Bad Ischl broke off the match. It was strange that the assistant was a Villach Regional League referee from Villach who happened to be present and he had to replace an assistant who was unable to attend. On April 25th, however, the criminal senate decided on a result-based certification. zw. With regard to the major reform, anyway had no meaning. Even if the match had been verified for the guests, as was the case if a club (in this case Donawitz) was at fault, it was practically a done deal that both teams would no longer belong to the top division in the following season.
Bundesliga reform
The league reform adopted by the Austrian Football Association after the end of the season caused a sensation on April 21, 1974 in the Viennese railway workers' home. In order to increase the level of the league, the number of participating clubs was reduced to ten. Regardless of the athletic qualification, it was determined that Vienna should have two Bundesliga clubs and all other federal states one Bundesliga club each. All other teams should be second class, the second division champions should have no opportunity for promotion in the reform year. The participating clubs per federal state were determined on the basis of a five-year evaluation. Master VÖEST Linz managed to reduce this concept to absurdity, because the club was behind LASK in the five-year ranking and should therefore have been relegated. So it was decided that the master did not have to relegate, and the LASK was given the opportunity to remain in the top division as the second Upper Austrian club through a qualifying tournament against the champions of the three regional leagues, which LASK also managed. As a result, Vorarlberg lost its place in the Bundesliga; FC Vorarlberg played in the second highest league, which from now on was called the "National League".
Forced descents:
- Donawitzer SV Alpine: forced relegation, as in the five-year ranking behind SK Sturm Graz.
- Wiener Sport-Club: forced relegation, as in the five-year ranking behind Austria and Rapid.
- 1. Simmeringer SC: forced relegation, because in the five-year ranking behind Austria and Rapid.
- Grazer AK: forced relegation, because in the five-year ranking behind SK Sturm Graz.
- Radenthein / Villacher SV: forced relegation, as in the five-year ranking behind Austria Klagenfurt, but also (theoretical) relegation in sporting terms
- First Vienna FC: compulsory relegation, as in the five-year ranking behind Austria and Rapid, but also (theoretical) relegation in sporting terms.
- FC Vorarlberg: compulsory relegation, as Vorarlberg did not have a fixed place in the Bundesliga, but also (theoretical) relegation in sporting terms.
As a result of this reform, almost all the second-rate teams of the 1973/74 season played in the third performance class (i.e. the national leagues) in the following season. Almost only those clubs that should have been promoted remained in second class - consequently, there were no promoters from the respective national leagues and the subordinate divisions.
