The Austrian Football Championship 1964/65 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The regional leagues East (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), Middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the State League A. The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First level - State League A
General
In the 1964/65 season, LASK was the first football club not from Vienna to win the Austrian championship (and also the cup). The championship had not started promisingly for LASK, because it started with a 1: 4 home defeat against Admira and in the second round a 2: 4 at Wiener Neustadt; only in the 3rd round succeeded with the -Heim-1-0 over newly promoted Wacker Innsbruck the first points win.
The decision was made on the last day of the match, July 3, 1965. It was the planned penultimate round on June 5, but it was practically postponed by a month due to bad weather conditions and deadlines - and it actually only had the exchanged round (officially round no. 26) made on June 20, when Rapid had a 0-2 home defeat against Admira and LASK defeated the GAK 4-0. Now on July 3rd, defending champion Rapid surprisingly lost 1-0 in Graz at the GAK, which was still in danger of relegation until just before the end of the championship, while LASK triumphed 2-0 on the Hohe Warte against Vienna and overtook the Hütteldorfer in the "last second" . LASK were only leaders once in the entire season, and that was only after the last lap! (These two matches, these were the only ones in the entire season, were conducted by referees from the Federal Republic of Germany: Rudolf Kreitlein from Stuttgart was in Graz, Karl Riegg from Augsburg was on the Hohen Warte .)
In the relegation battle only Sturm Graz had a " Chance of survival "- and they also managed a 4-2 away win at the already hopeless Vienna AC. But since the Styrian competitor Kapfenberg won 2-0 against the "by no means listless" Wiener Sport-Club (after only a one-year guest appearance; however, Sturm had already been in the state league from 1949/50 to 1953/54) the gear had to go the Regionalliga Mitte will be played.
For LASK it was the second national title after the amateur championship in 1931.
Only 29 goals scored (plus just one more goal) were a negative novelty for Austria Wien in previous Austrian championships. Coach Heinrich “Wudi” Müller justified this with the fact that he had used 7 different players as left wingers in eleven matches and had not found an acceptable solution, which was indicative of the striker's misery.
European Cup
The Linz team started in the 1966 European Cup , Cup finalist Wiener Neustadt was allowed to take part in the 1966 European Cup , and the Sports Club also registered for the 1966 Messestädte Cup . The latter was the only Austrian club to survive the first round (against PAOK Saloniki , away 1: 2, at home 6: 0) and then narrowly knocked out against Chelsea: After the 1: 0 at home on November 17, it was on December 1 Stadium Stamford Bridge (stadium) against the clear favorites, a 0: 2 defeat (albeit with some of sports club view questionable decisions by the French referee Jose Barberan , inter alia, the exclusion of.. Adolf Knoll (footballer, 1938) ).
At LASK, several summer resignations of supports such as Adolf Blutsch , Paul Kozlizek and Franz Schierhuber made themselves felt , of course, for the European Cup. Already with the 3-1 home win against Górnik Zabrze , the elimination was sealed, followed by a 2-1 defeat in Chorzów . Wiener Neustadt drew two defeats against Stintja Cluj from Romania (H 0: 1, A 0: 2).
Last time "State League"
This was the last time that the top division was called the "State League", from 1965/66 it was replaced by the "National League", which should be more "professional" as a whole.
statistics
After the fall, Rapid was ahead of the Sport-Club (19 each) and Wacker Innsbruck (17), LASK was only 7th with 14 points. But he was the best second half of the season (22 - without defeat!) Ahead of Admira (19) and Rapid (16).
Apparently the home record was decisive for the LASK title, because the Linzers were first with 21 points and thus one point ahead of Rapid; Admira came in third and was the best away team (17 points) ahead of Rapid, Sport-Club and LASK (15 each). The two direct duels LASK versus Rapid had ended 1-1 on November 7th in Vienna as well as on May 22nd in Linz. Surprisingly, that in the away table Austria Wien with 12 points only 11 and Wacker Innsbruck with 9 only 12.
Of the three relegated teams, only Sturm Graz was third from last in this zone after the autumn, with 7 points ahead of Kapfenberg and the GAK, who also had 7 points. The Vienna AC was 9th with 11 points, Wacker Wien was 11th with 8th. Although Sturm Graz was 10th in the spring table, this increase or the number of 12 points was not enough (the GAK and Kapfenberg reaped 13th ). Wacker Vienna with 7 and Vienna AC with 4 points fell significantly.
Rapid was the leader of the table in front of the Sport-Club (7) in a total of eleven laps. There had never been a championship title with only 36 points in the state league.
Other:
With 504 goals scored, it was the "poorest" game year so far, with 282 home and 222 away goals. The 182 matches brought 80 home and 51 away wins, plus 51 draws (22 of which were goalless). Of 50 penalties, 18 could not be used (7 missed, 11 saved). Of the 284 players, 29 played all matches; Innsbruck and Vienna AC managed with 17 players each, Wacker Vienna was the front runner with 26. There were 12 exclusions, 10 of them in autumn (of which Admira and Schwechat had the most with 3 each, while eight clubs were not sent off).
The total attendance was 1,071,000.
Master's degree
In the ÖFB General Assembly of Football, it was decided that the new football champion (from 1965) could attach an emblem to the clothing of his fighting team, which announces the title of championship.

Second performance level - regional league
Regional League East
In the Regionalliga Ost the 1st Simmeringer SC became champions.
The championship draw took place around July 21st, with the 1st round for the weekend of 22/23. August, the 13th round for 5./6. December were scheduled, but this last round was three weeks on the weekend 14/15. November brought forward.
After the autumn, SV Mattersburg led with 18 points (18: 7 goals) ahead of Siegendorf (25:15) and Elektra (24:15) with 17 points each, followed by Marchegg (15:10) and Simmering (19:16) with 16 points each. Last was Stadlau with only 6 points (15:31), the ranks 8 to 12 with 12 to 9 points were close together in the order Krems, Wienerberg, Rapid Oberlaa, Eisenstadt, Slovan-Olympia and Deutschkreutz.
Ultimately, a decisive factor was that Mattersburg, who had defeated eventual champions Simmering 2-0 in the first round of the season on August 22nd, the return match (this had to be canceled on February 27th due to the weather and was only added on Whit Monday, June 7th ) in front of a (by Austrian standards) record number of 7,000 viewers with 0: 5. Although the Burgenland were still leading with 36 points and one point ahead of Simmering, they played one more game. On the other hand, the Viennese could not use this, because they lost the supplement at Rapid Oberlaa 0: 3 on June 12th - From the 2nd spring round (this was the 15th round overall; date 6/7 March) it had for some Rounds were given a lot of weather-related cancellations, including matches of the Simmeringer. The final decision was made in the last round on June 20, when Simmering won the away game at Marchegg 2-1, while Mattersburg only played 1-1 on their own grounds despite a 1-0 break against Siegendorf.

Regional league middle
In the Regionalliga Mitte, SK Austria Klagenfurt celebrated the championship title.
Klagenfurt did not give up a point at home (43: 7 goals), but was also the best away team with 6 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats (15 points, 23:13 goals). Only in the spring table is SVS Linz ahead with 21 points (two points more, thanks to 3 draws against only one of the Klagenfurters). The Linz team had missed their chance in autumn when they came to only 14 points with four draws and four defeats each, while in the spring they only lost the direct duel against the Klagenfurters in the Wörtherseestadion with 1: 2 on June 20 (which was also the early Carinthia's title win had meant; SVS won 2-0 in Linz on November 22nd). Strictly speaking, however, it was the autumn second forward Steyr (at that time with 18 points four points difference on Klagenfurt) who continued to be the serious pursuer of the new master in the course of the second half of the season, and on June 20, the forward team had with the 1: 2 at Radenthein an unrecoverable deficit of 5 points.
The situation for Hertha Wels is strange, which is neither in the autumn nor back round table on a relegation rank (rank 10 or 11), but has two points too little in addition (also the worse goal difference).

Regionalliga West
In the Regionalliga West, SV Austria Salzburg fixed the championship title. Salzburg lost their opening game at Austria Lustenau 2: 4, they conceded their second defeat of the season at the later relegated SV Innsbruck (20 March with 0: 2), which was also his first win of the season; At that time the SVI was already in penultimate place (as it has been for most of the season) and with now five points was still four points behind RW Rankweil. However, another very good second half of the season was played, but it was not enough to stay in the league, even though the competitors were still close. Rankweil had only achieved the decisive advantage in the penultimate round on June 20 with the 1: 1 at Bischofshofen, whereby the 1: 2 in this championship phase for the SVI at the bottom of Oberndorf in the supplement on June 17 was of great importance.
In total, the number of (weather-related) game cancellations was not excessively high, which was also due to the fact that as a precaution the first second half of the season only started on the weekend of 13/14. March was scheduled. There was a curious game termination in the last round when a crossbar broke in the 65th minute of the match on June 26 between the two Vorarlberg clubs FC Lustenau against FC Dornbirn when the score was 2-0. The replay was played on June 30th and also ended 0-2.

Third performance level
Regional League Burgenland
In Burgenland, SC Pinkafeld secured the championship title. In a supplementary game on July 11th, SC Oberwart, who had already been relegated to the game, was able to give up last place to Parndorf with a 6-0 away win at Neusiedl. Pinkafeld won the title with 38 points from 26 matches, ahead of the tied teams Steinbrunn and Frauenkirchen (30 each).
Unfortunately, there is no information about the end of the table this season.
Regional League Carinthia
In Carinthia, Villacher SV won the championship title.
The championship went on 26./27. June to the end, but already two rounds before the end (May 30th) Villacher SV had a 1-1 draw in the local derby against SC Magdalen, who was then first pursuer at the time, to win the title early, with the traditional club known as the "blue and white" succeeding his relegation in 1963/64 immediately made it to the Regionalliga Mitte again - the intermediate result was 32 points compared to 27 of the Magdalener (the autumn second ASK was only fourth after the 20th round with 25 points).
Villacher SV offered the most mature performances and got the most points both at home (18) and away (16); at pursuers ASK Klagenfurt, the performance curve broke off in the second half of the season due to sensitive player failures. Relegated ATSV Wolfsberg only took one point away.

Regional league of Lower Austria
In Lower Austria, SC Tulln was able to secure the championship title. But there had also been a major bribery scandal in even lower divisions, in which four clubs were involved, which in addition to fines of 5,000 schillings each had to accept considerable point deductions, which meant that two clubs had to be relegated.
