The Austrian Football Championship 1980/81 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track 2nd division served as a substructure for the 1st division . The third performance level was the Regionalliga West (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) and the regional leagues of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria.
First performance level - 1st division
General
The championship started on August 14th with the encounter between Rapid Vienna and Sportklub (0: 1), the remaining matches followed on August 16 with u. a. the match between last year's champion Austria Wien against Admira (please see the further article «Further events»). Rapid Vienna had made an important transfer before the start of the spring championship, which Hans Krankl from CF Barcelona bought back (in installments or through borrowing and other sources of money).
After the fall, Sturm Graz led with 25 points ahead of Austria Wien and the GAK (23 each). On the other side of the table, only Austria Salzburg (10) and Eisenstadt (8) were threatened, as the third from bottom VÖEST already had 16 points. The forecasts before the start of the second half of the season on 14./15. February spoke of a title win for Austria Wien. But SK Sturm, led by top scorer Gernot Jurtin , was able to reach for the championship plate for the first time in the club's history. There was an ongoing duel between the Winter King and Austria: A 2: 5 in a direct duel at Sportclub Platz in Vienna (where Austria played their home games on their "wanderings" mostly in spring) led the table in the 32nd round on 23 May went to Wiener Veilchen with 41 to 40 points, but one lap later it was 42:40 for Sturm (with his 3-1 win over Salzburg while the competitor at LASK was also 2: 3), then Sturm increased with a 7: 0 against the Sport-Club (Austria in the big derby 0: 0 against Rapid) by one point, which Austria "got back" in the penultimate round (they won 3-0 in Eisenstadt, Sturm played at LASK 2: 2). The "final" took place on June 20th: Sturm prepared for the championship celebration at the home game in front of 22,000 spectators in the overcrowded Liebenau stadium against Rapid, but things turned out differently. Rapid played the nervous Graz 4-1, while Austria for their part defeated the GAK 6-1 in Dornbach and so unexpectedly celebrated the fourth championship win in a row and the 15th overall.
In addition to Austria in the European Cup of national champions , cup winners GAK in the European Cup of Cup winners 1982 and Rapid and Sturm Graz in the UEFA Cup 1982 competed internationally. The biggest success was Rapid, the club reached the round of 16 via Videoton Székesfehérvár and PSV Eindhoven, where they were only barely defeated by Real Madrid. There was a 1-0 defeat in the Prater Stadium on November 25th and a 0-0 defeat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on December 9th , but the Rapid board of directors criticized his coach Walter Skocik for the defensive concept . Austria only made it to the second round, where they suffered a fate almost similar to Rapid: against Dynamo Kiev at home 0: 1, then away from home 1: 1. For the GAK it was the last stop in the first round against Dinamo Tiflis (A 0: 2, H 2: 2). Sturm Graz had IFK Göteborg as an opponent in the second round, a 2-2 home match was followed by a close match in Sweden - Gothenburg's winning goal was only scored in the final minute with a penalty - and the tenor of the Graz reporters was "blatant disadvantage", "Partial game management by the Norwegian referee Rolf Nyhus".
Relegation battle
This was also exciting, but ultimately Eisenstadt had to relegate again. Here, too, there was a long struggle between Salzburg and the Burgenland and once there was an "advantage" for this one, one lap after that for the other - and the direct duel took place in the last lap. Looking back, the 34th round had brought the first small preliminary decision, because Salzburg won their home game against LASK 1-0, while Eisenstadt lost 2: 3 at Admira, with the former catching up with Eisenstadt in terms of points (21 each), but over the far better Goal difference. The penultimate round ended without points and goalless for both teams. A draw would have been enough for the Salzburg team in their home game at the Lehen stadium, late goals (including the 1-0 in the 77th minute from a penalty that goalkeeper Herbert Rettensteiner converted) brought the Mozartstadt team 2-0. The glimmer of hope "increase" (once again this idea was brought up on the wall) did not come true for Eisenstadt, which should have played a relegation game against the third in the second division , Vienna, in such a game .
Other incidents
Already in the first round on August 16, there was a match with Admira / Wacker against Austria Wien (0: 1) that occupied the sports authorities for a long time. It turned out that Gerhard Steinkogler , who last worked for Werder Bremen, had played for the Austrians , but was not eligible to play for this match (the official approval by the DFB had arrived too late); the last instance credited Admira with a 3-0 victory with 2 points on November 8, 1980. Steinkogler was only eligible to play against Admira (in the 19th round on February 21 with a 2-1 victory for Admira) from the spring of 1981 onwards.
Austria was also affected by a lack of discipline, because on October 4, 1980, their goalkeeper Friedl Koncilia had headed the opposing player Werner Gregoritsch when leaving after the match at Grazer AK (result 1: 1) . Koncilia was banned from the criminal senate for six months on October 13th ( Hannes Weninger had to replace him). In addition, Koncilia was eliminated from the team for the international match against Hungary on October 8th by team boss Karl Stotz , who witnessed this incident.
statistics
In the home table Austria was ahead with 30 points ahead of Sturm (26), GAK (25) and Rapid (24); in the away table it was Rapid before Sturm (both 19), then Admira (18) and Austria (16). Each penultimate and last Salzburg and Eisenstadt, with 18 points in the home balance for both. They were not very successful away, Salzburg had five points, Eisenstadt (without a win) with three draws thus three.
There were eight expulsions in total (Koncilia is not included because this was an incident after the game), of 42 penalties seven were saved and four missed. A total of 217 players were used, seven of which played the entire playing time of the 36 matches.
Curiosity
League chairman Hans Reitinger had obviously assumed that Sturm Graz would become champions, so he started the trip to Graz with the championship plate.

Regionalliga West
General
For the first time there is a Regionalliga West again - since the elimination after the “great reform” after the 1973/74 season. However, from 1977/78 the "Alpine League" was run with clubs from the associations from Tyrol and Salzburg.
