Gerhard "Gerd" or "Copa" Steinkogler (born September 29, 1959 in Graz , Styria ) is a former Austrian professional footballer and national player .
Club career
Steinkogler started the soccer game in the offspring of the Grazer AK . The attacker was able to celebrate his first national success early on by winning the Austrian championship with the U-20s in 1976.
From the 1977/78 season he was already used in the professional squad, in the following season the young talent was already convincing and in autumn 1979 numerous international clubs noticed him. Werder Bremen secured the rights to the player, the GAK received 5.5 million schillings from the sale, a very high sum for a young Austrian player in those days. From December 1979 Steinkogler was in action for the Hanseatic League, but soon injured himself so badly that he only made 7 missions (1 goal) during the season.
After the disappointing spring and Werder's relegation to the second division , Steinkogler moved back to Austria to FK Austria Wien in the summer of 1980 , where he was able to celebrate great successes. However, he was only eligible to play there from the spring of 1981 (delayed release by the DFB, which had also led to a 0: 3 certification against Austria in their first match at FC Admira / Wacker on August 16, 1980). In his first season he was Austrian champion in 1981 and cup winner the following year. A special memory is his diving header in the first round of the European Cup Winners' Cup in Vienna against Panathinaikos Athens . In the quarter-finals he then scored the decisive goal for promotion to the semi-finals at Camp Nou against FC Barcelona . With this and other decisive goals in the ÖFB Cup and the international cup competitions, Steinkogler was soon referred to as "Copa" (Spanish for the cup competition).
In the summer of 1983 Steinkogler first switched to SSW Innsbruck in Tyrol on loan , and from October 14, 1983, with the derby against SK Sturm Graz (1: 2), he played again for his parent club GAK. In the summer of 1984 he returned to Austria and was again Austrian champion with the Viennese and even a double winner in the 1985/86 season.
Just before the match on October 24, 1986 (3-1 home win against SK VOEST Linz ), the attacker was signed by Vienna . The "Arbeiterzeitung Wien" had not mentioned him in the pre-listing in the October 24th issue, reported about the transfer only on page 20 of the October 25th 1986 issue, stating that Steinkogler had been preferred to the Dutchman Johnny Rep . Steinkogler played for Austria's oldest football club until 1991 and was part of the team that was successful with Mario Kempes at the end of the 1980s.
In 1991 Steinkogler moved to the second-class Wiener Sport-Club , in 1992 to Donaufeld and in 1994 to SV Gerasdorf , where he made his last appearances in the 2nd division. In autumn 1995 Steinkogler played with the lower class WAF , in spring with the SKVg Pottenbrunn. He ended his career at SV Großriedenthal in the Lower Austrian lower class.
In his 332 games in the Austrian Bundesliga , he scored 99 goals.
National team
Steinkogler had an impressive start in the ÖFB team . Three days before his 20th birthday, he scored the goal to make it 3-1 in the home game against Hungary on his debut . Not least because of his susceptibility to injuries, he only made five appearances for the national team.
