Vienna AF

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wiener Associations-Football-Club is a football club from Vienna in Austria , which emerged in 1910 from a spin-off of leading players from the Vienna AC . The greatest successes of the WAF were the Austrian championship in 1914 and the cup victory in 1922. With the relegation from the top division in 1924, the club began to decline. For several decades the WAF has only been found in the lower class. After numerous name changes, it has been trading as WAF Vorwärts Brigittenau since 2015 after a merger , whereby the WAF stands for Viennese athletic football these days according to the club's coat of arms .

The outstanding player in the club's history is the 15-time national player Adolf "Adi" Fischera , who is not only one of the co-founders of the WAF, but was also involved in both titles. Sustainable known is Richard "Little" Kohn of 1932 as coach Bayern Munich led to the first championship and later at SC Feijenoord Rotterdam, the Netherlands earned a legendary reputation.

history

Foundation and first years

During the 1910 tour of the Vienna AC through Germany, with games in Berlin, Munich, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, there were differences between players who demanded more say in the club and the WAC. This led to the resignation of almost all members of the fighting team in the middle of the year, such as Adolf "Adi" Fischera , Johann Andres , Richard "Little" Kohn , Karl and Felix Tekusch as well as numerous players of the second team who founded the new football club Wiener Associationfootball-Club.

The former players of the Vienna AC chose the club name carefully, as the abbreviation of the newly founded club should result in WA C again in competition with the old regular club . The journalists and supporters of the club, however, divided the club name into "Wiener Association Footballclub", from which the name WA F , which later became common, arose . The club colors of the club were set with blue and yellow . The WAF was accepted into 1st class in Vienna on September 21, 1910 and was thus one of the founding members of the first official Vienna (Austrian) football championship in the following season 1911/12 . In the first season the WAF finished third and was one place ahead of the Vienna AC.

Promotion to master and cup winner

The first high point in the club's history was the runner-up in 1913, when the WAF, although beaten - seven points behind with the two-point rule - came second behind the dominant club of that era, SK Rapid Wien . The following year the great success came when the WAF after a 1-1 draw on the 18th and final matchday in May 1914 against Rapid from an unexpected 3-1 defeat by Rapids in a catch-up game played in June for the 17th matchday at 1 Simmeringer SC benefited. If there was a tie, the better victory-defeat ratio decided in favor of the team from Hütteldorf, which was once also known as "the Reds" . National player Johann Schwarz was the club's top scorer with 21 goals this season and the second best in the league. The 1914/15 season was overshadowed by the outbreak of the First World War . In the first half of 1915, the championship was therefore played in a simple round without second legs. In the final round, the WAF was again runner-up, one point behind the Vienna AC .

There were no major successes in the following seasons, although the WAF was still one of the top teams until 1920, when he was the penultimate only just avoiding relegation. In 1916, the WAF provided the Austrian top scorer for the only time in the club's history with Leopold Neubauer , who scored 21 goals. The second and last major highlight in the club's history was winning the Austrian Cup in 1922 with a deserved 2-1 victory in the final after 0 : 1 deficit in front of 15,000 spectators on the Hohe Warte against defending champion Wiener Amateur SV, who renamed himself FK Austria Wien in 1926 . Adolf "Adi" Fischera , the star of the team, and Klein with a forceful shot scored the goals for the Reds. This victory was popular at the time because the amateurs were one of the less popular teams at the time.

In the league, the Hütteldorfer reached between 1921 and 1923 places in the midfield. After a key player left the club in 1922 with the national player Maximilian Gold and the following year Fischera moved to First Vienna FC , the WAF lost noticeably in strength. At the end of the 1923/24 season, the WAF was the bottom of the table with only seven points from 22 games. With the resulting relegation, a lasting decline began for the club. Important players left the club; Goalkeeper Otto Janczik , for example, was drawn to Rapid, the offensive players Anton Powolny and Anton Kreuzer sought their luck as legionnaires in Italy.

Years in the 2nd division

The WAF held a total of 13 seasons in the 1st Viennese class, the then highest Austrian football league. After relegation to 2nd class, the immediate re-promotion in the 1924/25 season was only missed by three points. In the following season, the WAF only played out third place and therefore merged with SC International Wien to form International - AF Wien in 1926 . The newly founded club was lacking in playing strength and so it came a year later, in 1927, a syndicate with SC Libertas Vienna under the name IAF-Libertas Vienna . The syndicate only reached the disappointing 11th place, and those responsible dissolved this again after the 1927/28 season.

Between the minor league and the Viennese league

After this dissolution, the WAF was re-established under his name and went back into the championship as a separate club in a lower division. Despite its great past, the Vienna AF never managed to move up to the top division. Only with the championship title of the Vienna sub-league B in the 1974/75 season did the club get a breath of fresh air in the upper leagues. From 1975/76 to 1992/93 the WAF stayed in the Vienna League, which at that time represented the third and fourth level in Austrian football. In the spring of 1982 the club moved from Spenadlwiese in the 2nd district to Meldemannstrasse in the 20th district, to Brigittenauer Gruam . From 1985 to 1988 national player Robert Sara , captain of the famous Córdoba team from 1978, played for the club, who at the age of almost forty joined the club, which was then known as FKL Wimmer , and finally ended his career there. In 1988/89 WAF won the Vienna Toto Cup, which was held for the first time. After relegation in 1992/93, the club managed to get back up immediately in 1993/94 (122: 30 goals, Wolfgang Eisen with 46 goals Schützenkönig), but rose as 16th in the 1994/95 season immediately back to the Vienna Oberliga B (despite the ex-professionals Gerd Steinkogler and Robertas Fridrikas). The club remained there until its dissolution in 2004, when the long-time chairman Fritz Herrmann could no longer continue in health terms and no successor could be found. It was not until 2010 that the game was resumed in the Vienna Oberliga B as the successor club to FK White Star. In autumn 2010 WAF immediately won the ASKÖ CUP , in the final against Stadlau. In the Oberliga B the club played a very good role in the 2011/12 season and is aiming for a return to the Vienna league in the next few years. Andreas Denk has been working as a coach since the summer of 2011, who was active for WAF for many years, first as a player and then as a trainer in the 1980s and 1990s. In autumn 2011 they were again in the final of the ASKÖ CUP , but had to admit defeat against Fortuna 05 on penalties. In the 2017/18 season, the championship title was achieved in the 2nd regional league and the club rose again to the Vienna league.

The eventful name history

In the years between 1973 and 2004 the WAF appeared under different names. In 1973 there was a merger with the lower class club FK Leopoldstadt and the name was changed to WAF KL Leopoldstadt (Vienna) . From 1977 to 1981 there was a syndicate with the Neuchrist club under the name WAFKL / Neuchrist Vienna . After the syndicate was dissolved, the club took on as WAF Leopoldstadt from 1981 to 1983 . From 1984 to 1993 the WAF played under the names FKL Wimmer Vienna and WAFKL Wimmer Vienna in the Vienna League. In 1994 they finally returned to the club name WAF Leopoldstadt (Vienna) , but also played as WAF Procar in the championship. The last two seasons 2002-2004 the club played again under the name WAF in the Vienna Oberliga B (5th level), before the club withdrew from the championship at the end of the 2003/04 season and stopped playing. When the game was resumed in the summer of 2010, the club played under the name WAF Brigittenau . In the summer of 2015, the WAF and SV Vorwärts Brigittenau merged to form the WAF Vorwärts Brigittenau . The club played 2015-16 in the 2nd national league.
