The Austrian soccer championship 1948/49 was organized by the WFV association and contested by its members. In view of the reform of the state league, in addition to the single-track Viennese league , several state championships of the federal state associations served as a substructure for the (Vienna) league .

First performance level - league

General

FK Austria Wien became Austrian football champions for the third time and also won the third double in the club's history with their ninth cup win this season. A total of ten teams were represented in the first class. The nine teams that played in the Vienna League last year were joined by the newly promoted SC lawn player Hochstädt, who was immediately relegated from bottom of the table. A round-trip round of nine games each was played.

    Climbers

With the introduction of the State League A, the orientation of which was subject to the independent association of the Austrian State Football League, the championship was gradually expanded to the entire federal territory. For the first time since the end of the war, this allowed the state clubs to climb back into the top Austrian football league. For the time being, however, promotion to the state league was only reserved for the regional champions from Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria. Only with the introduction of the State League B , the Tauern League and the Arlbergliga from the 1950/51 season onwards was it really possible for every national champion to qualify for the top Austrian division.

    Second performance level

In addition to the Vienna League, the regional leagues from Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Styria were raised to the second level. The champions from these leagues were entitled to move up to the state league A.

    Regional league of Lower Austria

In Lower Austria, SV Gloggnitz became champions.
