First level - State League A
General
The Austrian championship of the 1949/50 season was a duel between Rapid and Austria, which ended in favor of the purple defending champion. This was the fourth time that Austria was Austrian football champions. Rapid put Austria under pressure with a winning run at the end of the season - including a 4-2 in a direct duel in front of 55,000 spectators in the Praterstadion - and was tied with her on the penultimate match day. A surprisingly clear 2: 5 defeat against Admira finally brought the Hütteldorfer out of the race, because they had to make up these lost two points on the last game day and overcome an 11-goal difference. This task was too big: In a double event in the Vienna stadium on June 24th, Rapid played its match from 4 p.m. and it was followed by another 1: 4 bankruptcy against the sports club. From 5.45 p.m. it was Austria's turn, but afterwards it was also shot down 4: 1 by Wacker in the “championship show”.

Vorarlberg regional league
In the 1949/50 season, a regional league was held in Vorarlberg, which SC Schwarz-Weiß-Bregenz won. In the next season there was no national league championship in Vorarlberg, because the Arlbergliga was founded to replace the regional league and therefore there were no promoters to the Arlbergliga. The first six teams were promoted to the Arlbergliga, the last two teams, FC Hard and FC Kennelbach, would have to relegate to the lower division, 1st class.

Relegation
Due to the reform of the second performance level to a B-League (from the second class and the regional leagues of Lower Austria, Styria and Upper Austria), an Arlbergliga (from the regional league Tyrol and Vorarlberg) and the retention of the Tauern League , a comprehensive relegation round was this season interposed for promotion to the A-League. Group I included the champions of the regional leagues of Lower Austria, Styria and Burgenland, the latter was allowed to participate although he was not a second division team. In Group II, the winner of the Tauern League, the Upper Austrian regional champion and the winner of the preliminary round between Vorarlberg and Tyrol's regional champions played. Furthermore, the winner of the second class rose directly to the A-League. This was about Elektra, to whom the relegation Wr. Neustadt and LASK.
