Alfred Körner (born February 14, 1926 in Vienna ; † January 23, 2020 there ) was an Austrian football player . The striker was seven times Austrian champion and cup winner with his club SK Rapid Wien in 1945/46. With the Austrian national team , he reached 3rd place at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland , the greatest success in Austrian football history. In the quarter-finals he scored two goals for Austria in a 7: 5 game against Switzerland, the so-called heat battle of Lausanne . The game is still the most scoring game in World Cup history.

Life

Alfred Körner was very successful in his position as a striker both at Rapid Vienna and in the Austrian national soccer team. As the brother of the older Robert Körner , he was nicknamed "Körner II". Together with his brother Robert - the right winger was nicknamed "Körner I" - he formed the best pair of brothers that ever played for Rapid Vienna.

The highlights of his career were two World Cup participations ( Soccer World Cup 1954 - 3rd place and Soccer World Cup 1958 - group stage) as well as a total of seven Austrian championship titles and the ÖFB Cup victory in 1945/46 with Rapid Vienna.

From 1942 to 1959, Körner wore the Rapid Dress for 17 seasons and scored a total of 157 goals in 283 championship games. In 1950/1951 the left winger won Rapid, a forerunner of the European Cup , the Zentropacup , which was intended as an initiative to revive the Mitropacup , which had been discontinued in 1940 . From 1959 to 1963 he ended his career as a football player with Admira Vienna .

From 1964 to 1967 Alfred Körner was the coach of First Vienna FC .

Until recently he took an active part in the club life of his heart club Rapid, was a member of the ethics council and, according to Rapid, attended every home game. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the main Rapidlauf competition, in which Körner gave the starting signal, was named Alfred-Körner-Lauf .

On January 23, 2020, Körner died after a short illness around three weeks before his 94th birthday in his hometown of Vienna. He was buried on February 6, 2020 at Baumgartner Friedhof .
