The Austrian Football Championship 1972/73 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.
First performance level - national league
General
The championship in the national league was contested with 16 teams, each of which met twice during the entire season. The syndicate between Wacker Innsbruck and WSG Wattens was able to jointly become Austrian football champions for the second time in the season and thus defend the title win of the previous season. It was the third title for Wacker. As an Austrian champion, the syndicate was able to qualify for the European Cup of National Champions in 1974 , where the club was eliminated in the first round. Cup finalist Rapid Vienna was allowed to take part in the 1974 European Cup , where the team reached the round of 16. The Grazer AK and FC Admira / Wacker represented Austrian football in the 1974 UEFA Cup ; the GAK failed in round 1, Admira / Wacker reached the round of 32.
The last two teams in the table had to be relegated. This affected Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz and Admira Wr. Neustadt, which were therefore no longer represented in the first division in the next season. These teams were replaced by the three champions of the regional leagues, 1. Simmeringer SC (east), WSG Radenthein (center) and FC Rätia Bludenz (west). Sturm Graz should also have been relegated, but successfully protested against relegation with reference to the irregular end of the championship (championship games were canceled or postponed due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Lower Austria).
Special Notes
The championship began on 11/12. August 1972 and there were incl. 18./19. August and 22./23. August played three rounds before there was an interruption due to the Summer Olympics starting in Munich (the German Bundesliga started late on September 16) and on September 15/16. September was continued. However, in between there was an international match at Stadionul Central in Craiova with a 1-1 draw against Romania, and some clubs were already involved in various European cup competitions on September 13th (only Rapid Wien in the cup winners competition against PAOK Saloniki thanks to an away 2: 2 survived the first round on September 27).
Lothar Ulsaß , who was banned from Germany on March 20, 1972 for accepting a prize, but later entitled to play abroad, came to the Vienna Sports Club in the spring of 1973. Hans Pirkner , who was involved in the Bundesliga scandal, was also banned from Austria due to FIFA instructions.
