The Austrian Football Championship 1952/53 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The also professionally run State League B served as the substructure for State League A , but only clubs from Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland , Upper Austria and Styria played. The Tauern League ( Salzburg , Carinthia ) and the Arlbergliga ( Tyrol , Vorarlberg ) were organized on an amateur basis for clubs from western Austria . The respective national leagues of the federal states acted as the third performance level.
The championship in the state league was contested with 14 teams that met twice during the entire season. FK Austria Wien was able to become Austrian football champion for the 5th time in the season . The violets achieved their last title win in the game year 1949/50. The last three teams in the table, Grazer SC, VfB Union Mödling and Salzburger AK 1914, were no longer represented in the first division in the next season. This meant that all those promoted from the previous season had to relegate immediately back to the State League B (Graz, Mödling) or Tauern League (Salzburg AK 1914).
The first two of the state league rose directly, the third placed was allowed to deny the relegation. The last six teams were relegated to the respective national leagues.
The Tauern League was considered to be the second level on an amateur basis and comprised clubs from the regional associations of Carinthia and Salzburg . The master took part in the qualification for the national league A, the two bottom of the table were relegated to the respective national leagues.
The Arlbergliga counted next to the Tauern League to the second level on an amateur basis. The master took part in the qualification for the national league A, the two bottom of the table were relegated to the respective national leagues.
The winner of the relegation games between the champions of the Tauern League and that of the Arlbergliga played against the third-placed club in the State League B for promotion to the State League A for the 1953/54 season. The other two promotion places were awarded to the master and runner-up in the State League B.
SV Austria Salzburg first played against the Arlberg League champions Innsbrucker AC for qualification for the relegation games for the State League A and won with an outstanding total score of 14: 0. The Tauern League champion finally qualified in the play-off for promotion with a total score of 7: 3 against third-placed State League B, Kapfenberger SV, for State League A.
