The Austrian Football Championship 1955/56 was organized by the Austrian State Football League Association. The also professionally run State League B served as the substructure for State League A , but only clubs from Vienna , Lower Austria , Burgenland , Upper Austria and Styria played. The Tauern League North ( Salzburg ), the Tauern League South ( Carinthia ) and the Arlbergliga ( Tyrol , Vorarlberg ) were organized on an amateur basis for clubs from western Austria . The respective national leagues of the federal states acted as the third performance level.

First level - State League A

General

The championship in the state league was contested with 14 teams that met twice during the entire season. Rapid Vienna was able to become Austrian football champions for the 20th time in the season . Defending champion Vienna took third place. The Hütteldorfer's last title win was in the 1953/54 game year. The last two teams in the table had to be relegated. This hit FC Wien and ESV Austria Graz, who were therefore no longer represented in the first division in the next season.

    Relegation

Relegation to the State League A

The champions of the Arlbergliga met in the relegation for promotion to the champions of the Tauern League South or North. This depended on whether the master of the Tauern League North won his relegation game against the runner-up in the Tauern League South; otherwise the champions of the Tauern League South would have faced the Arlberg League champions. The winner of this game finally met the runner-up of the State League B - the winner of this game rose. The other promotion place was reserved for the champions of the State League B. In contrast to the previous year, a Tauern League North and South was held for the first time.

The Arlberg league champion Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz first played against the Tauern league champion WSG Radenthein to qualify for the relegation games for the state league A. The WSG Radenthein was allowed to compete, while the Tauern league champions north, SK Bischofshofen, played against the runner-up of the Tauern league south, ASK Klagenfurt had lost a total score of 0: 4. The Vorarlbergers were only able to narrowly prevail against the Carinthians in a third decision game with a total score of 5: 4. However, the Bregenz lost in the playoff for promotion to the State League A against the runner-up in the State League B, Kremser SC. This was finally able to prevail with two narrow victories 4: 2.
