Josef Hamerl

Josef "Pepi" Hamerl (born January 22, 1931 ; † July 15, 2017 ) was an Austrian football player . The national player was part of the famous sports club storm of the late 1950s and was particularly famous for the European Cup match against Juventus Turin on October 1, 1958.

Career

Pepi Hamerl began his football career after the end of the Second World War with the small Liesingen clubs ASK Erlaa and SC Siebenhirten , before joining the Favoritner talent factory FC Vienna in early 1952 . He made his championship debut in the 2-0 home win against Floridsdorfer AC in the 22nd round, where he immediately put his new club in the front with a goal. Soon he became a regular player with the favorites and soon aroused the interest of some top Austrian clubs. In the spring season of 1955 Pepi Hamerl moved to Wiener Austria in the Prater , where he was, however, deported to the substitute bench. After only six months, the striker turned his back on Violets and returned to FC Wien. After Pepi Hamerl scored 18 goals in only 35 championship games in 1956, he promptly received an offer from the Vienna Sports Club , which he accepted. The striker should experience his most successful time in Dornbach. Together with Walter Horak , Adolf Knoll , Erich Hof and Karl Skerlan , he formed the famous Sport-Club-Sturm, with which he won the championship in 1958 and 1959. For two years, or 41 games in a row, he remained undefeated with his team. He played his most famous game in the European Cup . In the legendary 7-0 victory over the Italian champions Juventus Turin , he scored four goals alone.

Pepi Hamerl was also able to gain a foothold in the national team at this time, making his debut on March 23, 1958 in a 3-2 victory over Italy . He also played at the European Championship in 1960 , in which Austria failed in the quarter-finals to France, and was used in several well-known games in the Decker era, such as the victories over Spain and the Soviet Union in front of a record crowd in 1960. Together with storm colleague Karl Skerlan made the decision Pepi Hamerl joined Admira Vienna in Jedlesee in 1961 . As an Admiran, he wore the Austrian team dress for the last time against Egypt on January 5, 1962 . After only two years with Admira, however, he returned to the sports club, but was unable to continue the successful times in Dornbach. Pepi Hamerl completed his last season in the championship in 1967 for 1. Wiener Neustädter SC after he had been chasing goals for Kapfenberger SV a year earlier. He scored a total of 158 goals in Austria's highest league.
