Karl Skerlan (born January 3, 1940 - † February 7, 2017 ) was an Austrian football player . The national player was part of the famous sports club storm of the late 1950s, but was also able to celebrate great successes with his second club Admira Vienna .

Career

Karl Skerlan came from the small Burgenland club ASV Kittsee to the Wiener Sport-Club and was able to cause a sensation in his first championship year in the top league. Together with Walter Horak , Adolf Knoll , Erich Hof and Josef Hamerl , he formed the famous Sport-Club-Sturm, with which Karl Skerlan won the title on his championship debut. For two years, or 41 games in a row, he remained undefeated with his team, and was consequently able to win the championship in 1958/59. Karl Skerlan also achieved great success with the Dornbachers in the European Cup , the highlight of which was the legendary 7-0 victory over the Italian champions Juventus Turin , in which he also contributed a goal. Karl Skerlan was also able to gain a foothold in the national team at this time, making his debut on November 19, 1958 in Berlin in a 2-2 draw against Germany. He also played at the European Championship in 1960 , where Austria failed in the quarter-finals to France , scoring a goal against Norway . In 1961, Karl Skerlan and his club colleague Pepi Hamerl decided to move from Dornbach to Jedlesee to Admira Vienna.

With the Admirans, the striker quickly settled in, set a new personal record with 16 championship goals in 23 games and also became the best championship shooter for the black and whites. The first title win at the new club came in the cup in 1964, in the final Karl Skerlan and Admira defeated Vienna Austria 1-0. The year of the cup victory also saw the striker's last appearance in the national team, on November 11, 1964 in the 1-0 victory over the Soviet Union in Vienna. He remained active for Admira until 1967. In 1966 he was able to win the double with the club. In the championship he was no longer used as regularly as in his early years, but he was in the winning team in the cup final, which Rapid Vienna defeated 1-0. At the end of his career, Karl Skerlan went after a year with the German regional league club FK Pirmasens for four more seasons for SC Schwarz-Weiß Bregenz in the first and second league and was also a player-coach (1969/70 he moved with the then in the regional league West playing club in the cup semi-finals, where the team was only lost - after two draws against Linz ASK - by drawing lots against Linz.)
