The Austrian Football Championship 1968/69 was organized by the Austrian Football Association. The regional leagues east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), middle (Upper Austria, Styria, Carinthia) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) served as the substructure for the national league . The respective state leagues of the federal state associations acted as the third performance level.

First performance level - national league

General

In the 1968/69 season Vienna Austria was in its fourth year under coach Ernst Ocffekt a number of its own and was able to become Austrian champions with a clear lead. In 30 rounds there was only one defeat, a narrow 2: 3 home defeat in the 17th round on March 7th against Linz ASK (in the so-called "TV game" on Friday evening, however, played on the Hohe Warte - and only visited with 700 people because of the television).
The title was fixed ahead of time with a 4-1 win over FC Wacker Innsbruck (28th round on June 8th). One of the Veilchen's key players was newcomer Helmut Köglberger from LASK, who was the shooter king with 31 goals.
As Austrian champions, Austria qualified for the 1970 European Cup , Cup winner Rapid was allowed to take part in the 1970 European Cup , Sport-Club and LASK represented Austrian football in the 1970 Trade Fair Cup .
Rapid even had to go to a preliminary round in which
Helmut Redl scored a goal in the 54th minute after a 0-0 home win against Torpedo Moscow (August 27) in the second leg (September 3) at a 1-1 draw at Lenin Stadium Leadership of the Viennese attacked the away goal rule. But on October 1, all four clubs were eliminated in the first round. Rapid lost both matches against PSV Eindhoven (at home 1: 2, in the Philips Stadium 2: 4), and champions Austria also lost two defeats against Dynamo Kiev (home 1: 2, in the Kiev central stadium 1: 3). According to newspaper reports, Austria had been shown the limits, a statement by the sporting director Karl Rappan was mentioned about Rapid , according to which the team was under renovation ("Arbeiterzeitung" of October 3, 1969, page 16). The Wiener Sport-Club had won the home game against Ruch Chorzów 4: 2 in the trade fair city cup, but then suffered a 1: 4 defeat in the Ruchu Stadium. LASK already had no chance against Sporting Lisbon after the 4-0 first leg at the Estádio José Alvalade , and said goodbye with a 2-2 home win. As a result of the national league clubs' complaint due to a lack of viewers (reason: the television broadcasts), figures were published: According to this, each national league club receives an average of 160,000 schillings from the ORF (although the actual shares of the individual clubs vary greatly depending on the broadcast). In the German Bundesliga, radio and television broadcasters reward each club 90,000 German marks (approx. 600,000 schillings). A federal board meeting of the ÖFB held on December 13th in Kapfenberg did not bring the expected increase in the number of admitted foreigners from two to three, the reason given being that no specific application had been submitted; There was an innovation in that the team boss was now allowed to combine the national squad in a training camp 14 days before an international match.

Only two relegated members

On the basis of a resolution of the ÖFB federal board of July 14, 1967, only two clubs needed to relegate to 16 clubs from 1969/70 in view of an increase in the national league, but all three champions of the regional leagues were allowed to rise.

New introduction of goal difference and pre-nomination of 14 players on the match report

As in many other countries, the Austrian Football Association also introduced goal difference for all of its leagues instead of the previous method of goal difference for ranking in the tables in the event that two or more teams had the same number of points; if the goal difference was the same, the higher number of goals scored counted. Since the substitution of two substitute players was allowed since 1967/68, it was also decided that from October 15, 14 players could be pre-nominated in the match reports.

Rapid Vienna with interim trainer

Since Rudolf Vytlačil had to undergo a vein operation that had been planned for a long time, for which he went to the General Hospital in Vienna on November 13th, Karl Decker took over the coaching position at Rapid Vienna during his absence and was able to reach the second round of the European Cup during this time Master Real Madrid thanks to the away goals rule (on November 20 in Vienna 1-0, on December 4 in Madrid 1: 2).

Referee team had a fatal accident

The game of the sixth round between Linz ASK and FC Wacker Innsbruck, called the so-called »TV match« on Friday evening, September 27, 1968, should have been led by referee Eduard Babauczek from Vienna. Since the referee and his team did not arrive, the Linz top referee Erich Linemayr (with the consent of both clubs) was asked to take over the game management, the game started 25 minutes late and brought LASK a 4-2 win . It was only hours later (and therefore only on Saturday morning for the sports public) that it became known that Babauczek was involved in an accident on the way to his own car when he hit a truck in Krahof (apparently blinded by the low sun) . Babauczek's spouse, Elfriede, died immediately, referee Babauczek and linesman Emmerich Rau died that night in the Amstetten hospital , the second linesman Wilhelm Koldert (himself a former national league referee) died from his injuries on September 30th. - Babauszek (born 1925) had been a referee since 1949, of which he had been in the top Austrian league since 1954 (at that time as "Staatsliga A" or - after the additional "Staatsliga B" was discontinued - as "Staatsliga", from 1965/66 as " National League ") and has been on the FIFA list since 1964; he was the game director of 50 international matches, including 3 internationals. On October 1st, he should have headed the trade fair city cup match between Argesul Pitesti (ROM) and Leixoes Porto. The resulting gap was closed with the appointment of Mr. Artner, Adolf Mathias and Werner Spiegl.

Causa Johann Eigenstiller

The player from Wacker Innsbruck wanted to switch to Rapid Vienna in the summer transfer period of 1968: everything seemed to be going well for the time being and the player moved to Vienna. But on August 5th or 6th the message came that the transfer would not take place. Eigenstiller, who had deregistered from Innsbruck, accepted a "waiting period" (waiting period). The fact that he was a player on the Austrian national team was problematic and a bit strange - and coach Leopold Šťastný (he knew Eigenstiller from his time when he himself had trained in Innsbruck) did not want to do without Eigenstiller and used him regardless of this fact . Eigenstiller had received special permission from the ÖFB to be able to train with Rapid Vienna regarding this constellation. He was officially identified as an Innsbruck player in the match reports of the national team.
On October 9, Innsbruck and Rapid agreed that Eigenstiller was allowed to play for Rapid from January 1969, after which Eigenstiller played the remaining autumn games (for the first time on October 20 in Innsbruck's 2-0 away win at Donawitz) for the Tyroleans.

More seasonal events

  • In Austria Klagenfurt's game against Admira-Energie on October 20 (3-1), the guests illegally deployed three substitutes: goalkeeper Johann Draxelmayer was injured for the time being , so that second keeper Dragomir Vukicevic went in for him - after that two outfield players were added changed. This was not even noticed by the game director Paul Schiller, actually a top referee. The logical consequence was a 3-0 verification for the Carinthians, but otherwise it had no consequences for Admira, because the championship regulations were such that only if the game was not started or the game was abandoned, the table would be ranked worse.
  • The reintroduction of a "State League B" (a demand that has been asked again and again, which was even suggested by team boss Leopold Šťastný) had no chance of being realized after a board meeting of the ÖFB on February 28th. On the other hand, two other concerns were taken up by Šťastný: a study to improve coaching in the spring and a binding annual sports medical examination also in the professional area.
  • At the end of May, a paratyphoid epidemic broke out in Upper Austria, which led to cancellations and postponements. LASK initially wanted to play their match against Kapfenberg in Salzburg, scheduled for May 31, but this was postponed to June 18. In the Regionalliga Mitte it was the Steyrer Stadt-Derby Vorwärts against Amateurs on May 31st and SVS Linz against Bruck / Mur on June 1st, while Master VÖEST Linz played their match against Kapfenberg on June 1st in Liezen.

Statistical

  • The draw took place on June 24th. The championship start was on the weekend of 17/18. August (Austria Wien actually played against the Wiener Sport-Club on August 16 / result 2: 1) and the autumn end on 14/15. December terminated, whereby the "big Viennese derby" only appeared in the last round. Since there was an odd number of participants with 15 teams, 15 rounds were required, in each of which one team was free.
  • After the on 12./13. The 22nd round played on April 22nd, there was a more than two-week championship break, as the national team embarked on a "Mediterranean tour": First, on April 19th, the now meaningless World Championship qualifier in Nicosia against Cyprus was won 2-1, then there was two friendlies: on April 23rd in the municipal stadium Ramat Gan a 1-1 draw against the Israeli and on April 27th in the Gzira stadium in La Valletta a 3-1 victory against the Maltese national team. April 30th / April 1st May (during the week) continued with the 23rd round.
  • After the autumn series Austria led with 24 points (10 wins / 4 draws) ahead of Rapid with 22 points (10 wins, 2 draws and defeats each) and the sports club with 20 points; It was also decisive that Austria won the away game against Rapid 4: 3 in the last autumn round. At the bottom of the table Donawitz stood with 4 points (1 win, 2 draws), Eisenstadt and Wattens each had 8 points from 2 wins and 2 draws each; Bregenz appeared to be 11th with 11 points (5 wins, 1 draw), and Wacker Wien was even behind with 10 points. For the time being, Donawitz seemed to be on the right path in the spring as well, there were three "direct competitors": Wattens was beaten 2-1 in the 16th and 18th round and Wacker Vienna 3-1 in the On the 17th round there was a 2-0 defeat in Eisenstadt. But after that there was only one counter (home 2: 2 against the sports club on May 24th), with which the Upper Styrians broke away early. The decision about the second relegated was made in the last round on June 21st, with Eisenstadt actually having the most difficult task with the home game against LASK, because you had to win and had to rely on outside help. According to newspaper forecasts, Bregenz should have the relatively easiest task, which required a draw against Innsbruck. The match between Wattens and Austria Klagenfurt was open. The Eisenstädter and the Wattener each won 1-0, while Bregenz lost 2-1 in the West Derby (which was described in the newspapers as the "belated revenge of the Innsbruckers", because two years ago the Vorarlbergers, also in the last round, with the goal conceded by Heinz Pienz, the Tyroleans lost the championship title in their 5-1 victory). However, there had also been questions about Eisenstadt because of attempts at bribery; In the penultimate round (June 14th) at Sport-Club against Eisenstadt (0-0), the nominated referee Erich Linemayr from Linz resigned from the game management because of an attempt at bribery (the Styrian referee Alois Kessler then headed it).

Of course Austria Vienna was ahead in all the tables, with Rapid falling sharply in the spring table and only ninth (only 13 points from 5 wins and 3 draws). Austria had 22 points ahead of Sport-Club 18 and Innsbruck 17. Austria Klagenfurt fell back to third from last place (11 points), followed by Bregenz (10) and Donawitz (6). Austria scored 23 points at home, ahead of Sport-Club and Sturm Graz (22 each), followed by Rapid with 21. Austria also scored 23 points away from home, ahead of Sportclub 18 and Rapid 14. Donawitz was able to score 8 home and 2 Conquer away points. While Wattens (17) and Eisenstadt (15) have double-digit points as the rest in the very back area at the home games, there were 7 more clubs in the away table from 8th place (Sturm Graz with 9 points) (except Donawitz) "single-digit" - the others were Admira (9), Eisenstadt and GAK (6 each), Wattens (5), Wacker Wien (4) and Bregenz (3).
The number of viewers had decreased by approx. 100,000 compared to the previous year (931,330 compared to 1,032,212; it should also be taken into account that there were only 182 games in 1967/68 - an average of only 4,530 instead of 5,670 in the 210 matches this year. The reasons lay in the TV broadcasts and the fact that the title decision was made early. Rapid had the best overall average with 7,511, ahead of Austria Salzburg (6,766), while Donawitz was also at the bottom with 2,048. There were 115 home and 42 away wins with 415: 228 goals in favor of the home teams. The biggest surprise was Rapid's 2-0 home defeat against Wattens (27th round / 31st May).
25 players were excluded (although there were five at the GAK, but Wattens was not excluded), and 142 different players were cautioned in 289 cautions, with Bregenz legionnaire Gyula Szabó being noted nine times.

    Regional league middle

SK VÖEST Linz secured the championship title in the Regionalliga Mitte.

"June 29, 1969 - a black day for the two clubs from Steyr"

The championship officially ended with the 26th round (June 21/22), in which SK VÖEST Linz, who were already the champions, celebrated a 7-0 victory against their relegation-threatened Upper Austrian rivals SK Vorwärts Steyr on June 21 ( the match was canceled in the 68th minute, as the guests only had six players after two exclusions and three injuries, which only led to a result-based certification, but no other sanction against forward, i.e. poor ranking in the table. The "Oberösterreichische Tagblatt" questioned the authenticity of these injuries in its June 23 issue. But there were still a few follow-up games important for relegation. Ultimately, however, in addition to the Klagenfurt AC (currently known as FC KAC 1909 from around 2014 ), both clubs from Steyr had to go after a 2-2 in a direct duel in the supplementary game to the 23rd round (May 31 / June 1) on 29. June descend. Amateurs Steyr had already been relegated before this derby, Vorwärts still had a chance, because at the same time the equally endangered Hönigsberg had an opponent who was not quite safely rescued as a guest. But since Hönigsberg won 3: 2, the 2: 2 was too little for Vorwärts Steyr (both Hönigsberg and Vorwärts had the same goal difference with minus 16, only Hönigsberg had scored more goals; Vorwärts, for example, would also have at least 3: 2 won, it would have had a goal difference of minus 15 with 23 points). Strangely enough, amateurs had even led twice in this derby. (Theoretically, the Wolfsberger AC and SC Magdalen were also at risk, but they had a good goal difference - and since it was an internal Carinthian duel, the 1-1 score in the supplement was helpful for both of them.)
It was even a supplement game from the 24th round (June 7th / 8th) between Amateurs Steyr and ASK Voitsberg was scheduled for July 5th at 5.30 p.m., but it was decided on its event with regard to the fact that this was at the bottom of the table (mainly because of the relegation of Amateurs) would not have changed anything essential, and shortly afterwards the match was taken over into the table by the parity commission responsible for the regional league with 0-0 goals and zero points.

In Carinthia, SV Rapid Lienz from East Tyrol, which, like all football clubs from East Tyrol, has always been part of the Carinthian Association, celebrated the championship title. Thanks to Pepi Josef Webora , who came from the Vienna Sports Club during the summer transfer period in 1968 , who took the role of the "last man" (stopper) and at the same time the coach, the team, which had been very good at that time, won the necessary class (tactical discipline, defensive behavior). Already on May 17th, with four remaining matches, the people of the Dolomites were certain as champions.
