Ernst "Ossi" Ocffekt (born March 7, 1926 in Vienna ; † January 23, 1980 in Klein-Pöchlarn ) was an Austrian football player and football coach .

The trained model maker Ocffekt was one of the greatest Austrian footballers of the post-war period. He was the captain of the Austrian national team and the world selection and was considered the best central midfielder in the world in his time. His strengths were the elegant ball handling, the header game and long passes.

Career

Ernst Ocffekt began his career as a football player at FC Stadlau in 1938 and later came to Floridsdorfer AC . There the former wonder team strategist Pepi Smistik worked , who recognized Ernst Ocwirks talent. He switched the center forward to the position of center runner, as he had once played it himself. Smistik tried to bring the young Ocffekt to his former club Rapid . Arch-rival Austria , however, took action more quickly and financed new rows of seats and changing rooms for the FAC stadium as a replacement.

Ernst Ocffekt soon became one of the most important players at Wiener Austria and led "Die Veilchen" to five championship and three cup winners' titles. He was also able to celebrate great successes with the national team. He was a regular on the team for almost a decade - the highlight was his third place at the 1954 World Cup . In 1956 Ernst Ocffekt left Vienna Austria to be the first Austrian professional footballer to move to Sampdoria Genoa in Italy . The time there was mixed. Two fourth places in Serie A were the highlights, while at the other end only the 14th place was achieved once.

After finishing his playing career, Ernst Ocffekt became a coach at Sampdoria in 1962. He was released in late January 1965. Sampdoria was first eleventh and escaped relegation in 1964 only after a play-off against the tied team from Modena. In January 1965 he was replaced by Giuseppe Baldini after a 3-0 home defeat against Lanerossi Vicenza , after which the team was in 14th place . He also introduced the hard training methods and strict team management he had introduced there at Vienna Austria. There he was also able to win two championship and one cup titles as a coach.

The 1970/71 season spent Ocffekt in Germany with 1. FC Cologne . where he succeeded Hans Merkle , under whom Cologne finished fourth in the Bundesliga and made it to the DFB_Pokal final. Under Ocffekt 1. FC Köln were in first place after two match days. The third game was the final of the DFB Cup 1969/70 , which could only take place at the beginning of the 1970/71 season due to scheduling difficulties due to a violent winter and the 1970 World Cup. The final was lost 2-1 against Kickers Offenbach , who qualified for the final as a second division team but had since been promoted to the Bundesliga. 1. FC Köln with the team around Wolfgang Overath . Wolfgang Weber and Heinz Flohe finished the Bundesliga in eleventh place, but were able to qualify again for the German cup final , where the final was lost this time 2-1 after extra time against Bayern .

He then continued his career with Admira Wacker until it came to an abrupt end. In a championship game against DSV Alpine , he ran onto the field and tore an Achilles tendon. After the operation, which was then carried out, symptoms of paralysis occurred, which slowly spread to the entire body. Ernst Ocffekt, who suffered from multiple sclerosis , died at the age of only 53 on January 23, 1980, exactly 41 years after the death of Austria legend Matthias Sindelar .

Ernst Ocffekt is buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 40, number 136, designed by Leopold Grausam, junior ). He was posthumously among other things, in the Austria-Team of the Century and the Austria called the century -ELF. While still alive, he was named captain of the world selection in 1953 and 1955 and was named the "best footballer in the world" by the French newspaper France Football (1952). In the 21st district of Vienna, Ocffektgasse has been named after him since 1982 .
