The 1971 DFB Cup winner was FC Bayern Munich . The record cup winner Bayern Munich succeeded in 1971 forthe fifth timesince the DFB Cup was introduced in 1953 . In the Bundesliga match shortly before, FC Bayern won 7-0 against 1. FC Köln. The defending champion and Bundesliga promoted Kickers Offenbach was eliminated in the first main round against the regional division VfR Heilbronn . In the replay between FC Schalke 04 and VfL Wolfsburg in the first main round, a penalty shoot-out had to be used as a decisionfor the first time. In the game between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Gerd Müller shot a flawless pack of five.

In the European Cup Winners' Cup, Bayern were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual European Cup winners Glasgow Rangers , against whom they won the title in 1967 .
