DFB Cup 2011/12

The DFB-Pokal 2012/13 was the 70th staging of the men's soccer cup competition. The final took place on June 1, 2013 and, as has been customary since 1985, was held in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

With a total of 16th win of the DFB Cup, FC Bayern Munich secured the "triple" of championship , Champions League and cup victory for the first time .

FC Bayern Munich had already qualified for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League through the Bundesliga . Therefore, VfB Stuttgart qualified as a defeated cup finalist for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League , but had to start there in the third qualifying round and then retired in the play-offs against HNK Rijeka . The Bundesliga sixth Eintracht Frankfurt advanced into the play-off round, the Bundesliga fifth SC Freiburg advanced into the group stage.

As in the previous season, no two teams from a club or a corporation were allowed to take part in the games for the DFB club cup.

1The three regional associations with the most men's teams in play had two starting positions. For Lower Saxony and Westphalia, for example, in addition to the cup winners, the defeated cup finalists took part, and for Bavaria another participant was determined through playoffs.
2Initially, Dynamo Dresden was banned from the competition due to rioting by fans. However, the DFB revised this decision on February 23, 2012. In return, the club had to complete the league game against FC Ingolstadt without a spectator, play a game against Eintracht Frankfurt without its own fans and pay a fine of 100,000 euros.
3The defeated cup finalist SC Eltersdorf (lost to SpVgg Unterhaching) played in the decider against the winner of the defeated semi-finalists, Wacker Burghausen (2-0 against TSV Großbardorf). Burghausen won 2-1 and was thus qualified for the DFB Cup.
4th Since cup winners 1. FC Heidenheim had qualified through the 3rd division, SG Sonnenhof Großaspach claimed the right to start in the DFB Cup as a defeated finalist.

draw

For the draw for the 1st main round on June 23, 2012, the 64 teams were placed in two equal pots: The amateur pot included all teams that

  • have qualified for the DFB-Pokal through the state cups (24),
  • finished the last four places in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2011/12 season (4)
  • finished in the first four places in the 3rd division in the 2011/12 season (4)

Each of these teams was drawn to a team from the professional pool, which included all teams in the Bundesliga and the 14 highest-placed teams in the 2nd Bundesliga for the 2011/12 season. The teams of the amateur pot enjoy the home right .

The draw for the games in the 2nd round took place on August 25, 2012. The draw for the 2nd round also included an amateur and a professional pot. Here, however, all teams in the 2nd Bundesliga were considered professional teams. Here too the amateur teams enjoyed home rights. If one of the pots was used up, the remaining pot was drawn to the end; the team drawn first in a pairing always received home rights.

From the last sixteen onwards, there was only one pot to draw. Home rights enjoyed an amateur team when they played against a professional team, otherwise the team drawn first in a pairing.

Events

The game rounds were played on the following dates:

  • 1st main round: 17th – 20th August 2012 (Fri-Mon)
