DFB Cup 2019/20

The 2020/21 DFB-Pokal was the 78th edition of the men's soccer cup competition. The final took place on May 13, 2021, unchanged since 1985, in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Borussia Dortmund won the final 4-1 against RB Leipzig and won the trophy for the fifth time. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the final took place without spectators.

The cup winner Borussia Dortmund would have received a direct starting place in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League 2021/22 . Since Dortmund has also qualified for an international starting place via the league, the sixth-placed Bundesliga 2020/21 will move up from the playoffs of the UEFA Europa Conference League 2021/22 into the group stage of the Europa League, instead the seventh will receive the vacated starting place.

In contrast to previous years, the semi-finals kicked off on the first weekend in May and not during the week. In addition, the final did not take place on a Saturday, but on a Thursday (Ascension Day). Furthermore, no two teams from a club or a corporation were allowed to take part in the games for the DFB Cup.

Defending champion FC Bayern Munich was eliminated in the second main round against second division Holstein Kiel , last year's finalist Bayer 04 Leverkusen failed in the round of 16 against regional division Rot-Weiss Essen .

1The three state associations with the most men's teams in play (Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Westphalia) have two starting places. In addition to the cup winner, the winner of the second cup competition (Lower Saxony), the best-placed Bavarian regional league team and the winner of the qualifying game between the champions of the Oberliga Westfalen and the best-placed Westphalian team in the Regionalliga West take part.
2 Since the champions of the 3rd division, FC Bayern Munich II, are not eligible to start as the second team in the DFB-Pokal, MSV Duisburg qualified fifth for the DFB-Pokal.
3Since the FSA Cup 2019/20 was canceled before the semi-finals were completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the participants concerned and the Saxony-Anhalt Football Association agreed to register 1. FC Magdeburg as a participant in the DFB Cup.

1st main round

  • Due to the high economic and organizational effort required to comply with the Corona hygiene concept and the lack of audience income, the DFB exceptionally allowed the amateur clubs to assign the home rights. TSV Havelse, FV Engers 07, FSV Union Fürstenwalde, FC Oberneuland, RSV Meinerzhagen, VSG Altglienicke, MTV Eintracht Celle, Eintracht Norderstedt, FC Rielasingen-Arlen, 1. FC Düren and 1 FC Schweinfurt 05 use and competed abroad.
  • Since FC Bayern Munich had only played the Champions League final in Lisbon on August 23 , its game was postponed to October 15 at the request of FC Bayern.
  • The DFB basically allowed spectators, although visiting fans were banned. However, the decisions were made by the local health authorities . In addition to some ghost games , the number of spectators ranged from a few hundred to just under 10,000 in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium for the game Dynamo Dresden against HSV.
  • FC Schalke 04 should have played against 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 in the local Veltins Arena on September 13th . 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 was announced by the Bavarian Football Association (BFV) as the best Bavarian regional league for the DFB Cup. At the time of the report by the BFV, however, the club was only in first place in the interrupted regional league season that only continued in September , because the table leader Türkgücü Munich previously declared promoted to the 3rd division 2020/21 and from the rating in the current season had been taken. On September 11th, the Munich Regional Court I granted an application from Türkgücü Munich from the previous day and obliged the BFV by means of an injunction to "provisionally" revoke the notification of 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 and instead "provisionally" to Türkgücü Munich for the first main round Report. The DFB was obliged to accept this. According to the 37th Civil Chamber , which specializes in antitrust law , the advancement of 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 was not covered by the BFV's statutes and was therefore illegal. The DFB then canceled the game between Schalke and Schweinfurt.
The BFV and the DFB laid contradiction one of the preliminary injunction. The 37th Civil Chamber partially overturned the preliminary injunction with a judgment of September 30th and changed it by obliging the BFV to revoke the registration of 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 and of the registration for the 1st DFB Cup main round the legal opinion of the court to decide again. According to the ruling, the BFV would have had two options: reporting from Türkgücü Munich on the basis of the game rules of May 5, 2020 or a short-term change to the game rules, on the basis of which 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 could be reported. An appeal against the judgment could be lodged with the Higher Regional Court in Munich .
On October 8, the BFV announced that it had appealed the judgment and at the same time wanted to appeal to the competent arbitration tribunal in Nuremberg . On the same day, the DFB rescheduled the game on November 3rd or 4th. The Bavarian Supreme Court rejected an application from Türkgücü Munich to establish that this arbitration procedure was inadmissible . On October 27, 2020, the arbitral tribunal confirmed the BFV's report by 1. FC Schweinfurt 05. Since the arbitration agreement precluded going to ordinary courts , the decision was final. For the game, the Schweinfurt team again relinquished home rights to FC Schalke 04.

2Since SV Rödinghausen could still have qualified at the time of the draw via the Westphalia Cup as well as the qualifying game of the Regionalliga West , the final allocation of the two participants was determined after the two competitions were over.
3The game took place in the Heidewald Stadium in Gütersloh .

2nd main round

The draw had to be postponed twice due to the legal dispute over the opponents of FC Schalke 04 in the first main round and finally took place on November 8, 2020. The broadcast ran on the ARD sports show ; The former national player Inka Grings acted as ticket fairy .

The game between Holstein Kiel and FC Bayern Munich was postponed to January 13, 2021 at the request of FC Bayern “due to the enormous number of games until Christmas”. The game between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt was also held for the same reason Postponed January 12, 2021. SSV Ulm 1846 ceded its home rights to FC Schalke 04. Due to the changed pandemic situation, all games had to take place in camera.
