particularities

  • As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , gaming operations were suspended in mid-March 2020. The first leg of the round of 16 could still be played with spectators. The first half of the second leg could still be played, albeit partially without spectators. The second half of the return legs (as well as the final games of the Champions League and Europa League on March 23 ) were postponed indefinitely. In August 2020, a final tournament with only one knockout game (similar to a World Cup ) took place in the Portuguese capital Lisbon from the quarter-finals .
  • As the tournament was reduced to knockout games from the quarterfinals onwards, the finalists played eleven games instead of the usual 13 games.
  • With FC Bayern Munich, a football club won all games in a UEFA Champions League season for the first time. Bayern also set records in the Champions League for the highest percentage of goals per game (3.91) and the highest win in a knockout game (8: 2 against FC Barcelona).
  • PSG was in the final of the Champions League for the first time in club history, with a Ligue 1 team reaching the final for the first time since 2004 .
  • Kingsley Coman became the first player in the history of the competition to score against a former club in the final. The goal was also the 500th goal of Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
  • For the first time since 2012/13, a German team was in the final with FC Bayern Munich.
  • The final was broadcast on ZDF on the basis of the State Broadcasting Treaty , according to which "media events of high social relevance" must be seen live on free TV if a German club is participating ; commented by Béla Réthy .
