The 2016 UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid was the final of the 2015/16 Champions League season . It took place on May 28, 2016 in Milan's Giuseppe Meazza Stadium . Real Madrid qualified as final winners for the 2016 UEFA Super Cup and the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup . The participants were determined in the semi-finals on April 26th and 27th (first leg) and May 3rd and 4th (second leg).

At the Executive Committee meeting of UEFA on 18 September 2014 in Nyon Milan's San Siro was determined as the venue for the Champions League final 2016th Opened in 1926 as the home of AC Milan and sold to the city in 1935, AC Milan and Inter Milan have shared the stadium since 1947. It was the venue for the soccer world championships in 1934 and 1990 and the European championship in 1980 . It currently holds 80,018 spectators. After 1965 , 1970 and 2001, it was the fourth final of the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League to be played in this stadium.

The logo for the final was presented to the public on August 27, 2015 in Monaco before the group stage draw. It shows the Milanese landmark Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II .

The UEFA ambassadors for the final were Javier Zanetti and Paolo Maldini , who played for the two major local clubs at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium for many years. Of the 71,500 tickets , 25,500 went to UEFA and its member associations, broadcasters and sponsors. Of the remaining 46,000, 20,000 each went to the finalists' clubs and 6,000 went on sale through UEFA on March 5, with prices ranging between 70 and 440  euros . The annual “Champions Festival” took place from May 26th to 29th, 2016 in Milan's Piazza del Duomo .

The 2015/16 UEFA Women's Champions League final was played two days before the men's team final at the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore in Reggio nell'Emilia .

The American singer Alicia Keys performed at the opening ceremony before kick-off . It was the first time that such a ceremony had a live music performance. In addition, the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli sang the anthem of the UEFA Champions League when the teams arrived.

For the first time, the goal-line technology " Hawk-Eye " was used in a final of the most important European football cup .

The winners of the semi-finals were qualified: Real Madrid , which beat Manchester City , and Atlético Madrid , which defeated FC Bayern Munich .

The referee of the game was Mark Clattenburg . The UEFA nominated the 41-year-old Englishman on 10 May 2016th
