The Olympic Stadium in Munich
The 1996/97 UEFA Champions League was the 5th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 42nd overall and was won on May 28, 1997 by Borussia Dortmund in the Munich Olympic Stadium against the defending champions Juventus Turin. Once again, not all registered national champions were at the start, as, due to the increased number of member associations since the beginning of the 1990s, UEFA had decided to allow the champions , who were lower in the UEFA five-year standings, to start in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup . As in the previous year, only 24 teams from 23 national associations took part in the competition, including defending champion Juventus Turin. In addition to Turin, AC Milan was the current national champions for Italy.

There was a slight change compared to the previous year. For the first time, the losers in the qualifying round were allowed to continue playing in the first round of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, which was taking place at the same time .
