Player career

society

Paolo Montero, the son of Julio Montero Castillo , began his professional career with Peñarol Montevideo in Uruguay, where he played until 1992. At the end of 1991 it was already known that he would leave the club in June 1992. After differences with coach Ricardo Ortíz , he was kicked out of the squad in December of that year. In the summer of 1992 he moved to Atalanta Bergamo in the Italian Serie A , where he made his debut on September 8, 1992. Due to his strong performances, he was signed by Juventus Turin in 1996 . There he played at the highest level for nine years and together with Ciro Ferrara formed one of the best central defenses in the world in the late 1990s. In the summer of 2005 he moved back to South America to the Argentine Club San Lorenzo . When his former teammate at Juve and good friend Gianluca Pessotto attempted suicide in June 2006, Montero immediately flew to Europe to visit him and he stayed in Turin until his life was out of danger after several weeks. From 2006 to 2007 he played again at his home club Peñarol in Montevideo, after which Montero ended his active career.

In his very successful career, he won five Italian championships, three Italian Supercups, one European Supercup, a World Cup and a UEFA Intertoto Cup with Juventus Turin .

Paolo Montero holds the record for most dismissals in the Serie A . He was sent off a total of 16 times in his 266 games in Italy's top division. In the ranking, Luigi Di Biagio and Giulio Falcone are followed by two players who were sent off twelve times.

National team

Montero took with the Uruguayan U-20 selection at the U-20 South American Championship in 1991 and finished third with the team. During the tournament he was used six times (no goal) by coach Juan José Duarte . In the same year he played with the Celeste in the Junior World Cup in 1991 , but with the team he was eliminated in the group stage. He made his debut on May 5, 1991 in a 1-0 draw against the USA in the senior team and played a total of 61 international matches, in which he scored five goals. With Uruguay he took part in the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 Copa América . He led his team as captain through qualifying for the 2006 World Cup up to the playoff second leg against Australia . That game, Montero had to be substituted off due to an injury and his team was eventually eliminated on penalties. Then he announced his retirement from the national team after 61 completed international matches, in which he scored five goals.

Coaching career

Montero has been coaching Peñarol's reserve team, who play in the Tercera División, since at least 2014. On November 11, 2014, he was promoted to head coach of "Aurinegros" as the successor to Jorge Fossati, who had resigned two days earlier, as an interim solution until the end of Apertura. From 2015 Peñarol filled the coaching positions of the first and second team with Pablo Bengoechea and Robert Lima . From March 2016 to June 2016 he coached the Boca Unidos team . Since July 2016 he has been the head coach of the Argentine first division club CA Colón .
