Serie A 2001/02
The Serie A teams of the 2002/03 season

The Serie A 2002/03 was the 71st season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It only started on September 14, 2002 because of the legal dispute over broadcasting rights. It was strange that the season started with the second day of the game, as the entire first day of the game could not be made up until the beginning of November due to the television broadcasting rights that were still unresolved in September and the league strike . The season ended with the 34th matchday on May 24, 2003.

As in the previous year, record champions Juventus Turin won the Scudetto , the Italian championship title . Atalanta Bergamo , Piacenza Calcio , Como Calcio and Torino Calcio had to relegate . The top scorer was Christian Vieri from Inter Milan with 24 goals this season .

Season course

For a long time the title fight was a three-way battle between the reigning title holder Juventus Turin and the two Milanese clubs Milan and Inter . Juve secured the championship title early on matchday 32. As in the previous season, Inter Milan finished runner-up, but lost ground to Juventus. Seven points was the distance to the champions, although coach Héctor Cúper after the departure of Ronaldo and of having top scorer Christian Vieri Lazio committed Hernán Crespo was a torgefährliches strike partnership available. City rivals AC Milan had to worry about qualifying for the UEFA Champions League with the world champion Rivaldo signed by FC Barcelona . Milan topped the table early on after the start of the season. The first defeat of the new season came on the seventh matchday with a 2: 3 at AC Chievo Verona , two weeks later there was a 1: 2 defeat in the top game at Juventus Turin. Milan led the table until matchday 19, before a series of three wins from eleven games meant the end of the title fight. The key game of the season was the duel between Juve and Inter on matchday 23. Juventus beat Inter Milan 3-0 in front of their home crowd and sat at the top of the table, which they did not give up until the end of the season. In the fight for the top, Lazio was involved for a long time, which despite the sales of Hernán Crespo and Alessandro Nesta played without significant new signings due to the poor financial situation. In the end, Lazio qualified for the Champions League.

After a false start of two defeats at the beginning of the season, AS Roma could no longer intervene in the championship battle, and the other goals were all missed. In the end, the 2001 champion found himself eighth. For the UEFA Cup, AC Parma , who had to sell some top performers before the season, and Udinese Calcio qualified . The newcomers of the previous season AC Chievo Verona was on a European Cup place for almost the entire season, but lost their European Cup participation on the last day of the match due to a defeat at Juventus Turin, who were already champions.

Four teams had to tremble for relegation until the end of the season. In the end it caught Piacenza Calcio , Como Calcio and AC Turin , who were relegated early. The FC Modena was spared the transition into the second division, while Atalanta despite two wins to end the season in the relegation match against Reggina Calcio had to determine the fourth relegated. Reggina won after a 0-0 draw at home away from Bergamo and remained first class.

particularities

Due to the unclear legal situation of the broadcasting rights for the 2002/03 season of Serie A , the first game day was not made up until November between the eighth and ninth game day. The canceled game on matchday 12 between Como Calcio and Udinese Calcio was rated 0: 2, while the match on the 22nd matchday between AC Turin and AC Milan was rated 0: 3.

Performing in the European Cup

After unsuccessful years on the international stage, the Champions League winner was determined this time directly from the Serie A clubs. After an Italian semi-final, in which AC Milan prevailed against city rivals Inter, Juventus Turin waited in the final. Milan won on penalties after goalless regular time, winning the Champions League after winning the last time in 1994. For Serie A it was the first title in this competition since 1996. At that time Juventus Turin won on penalties against Ajax Amsterdam . However, Serie A in the UEFA Cup could not maintain its dominance in the Champions League. Only Lazio made it to the semi-finals, but failed there against the Portuguese representative FC Porto (0: 0.1: 4).
