The 2002/03 season of Serie B started on August 31, 2002 and ended on June 7, 2003. The promotion to Serie A reached AC Siena , Sampdoria Genoa , last year relegated US Lecce and AC Ancona . The descent was clarified in front of sports courts. So put Catania , athletic already relegated, due to a rule violation by a competitor an appeal and got before an administrative court. Another scandal in Italian football was looming, so that even Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi got involved in the dispute. By decree, he ordered the associations to keep both Catania and the relegated CFC Genoa and Salernitana Calcio in Serie B. This sparked massive protests from the other 20 Serie B clubs, who felt they were being disadvantaged by renewed political interference in football. 19 of the 20 clubs boycotted various Serie B and Coppa Italia games in the 2003/04 season. Ultimately, the following season started with 24 teams.
The top scorer was Igor Protti from AS Livorno with 23 goals this season.
