The ACR Messina (officially: Associazione Calcio Riunite Srl Messina ) is an Italian football club from Messina , Sicily .

history

The first club of this name was founded in 1900 as Messina FC and was called ACR from 1947 to 1993 . The R stood for Riunite (reunited) at the time . After further renaming and a re-establishment in 2009, the club plays in the Italian Lega Pro , the third highest Italian division. The home games will be played in the Stadio San Filippo with a capacity of 40,200 people .

Review: After a year in Serie A and the sporting relegation, remaining in the top game series was endangered by a decision of the sports court of the Italian football association FIGC . On July 25, 2005 this decided not to give Messina and AC Turin a license for Serie A because both clubs had accumulated enormous debts. Messina had amassed around 18 million euros in liabilities. The Sicilians , however, successfully appealed against this decision. The Supreme Court in Rome on August 1 confirmed the league's whereabouts in Serie A.

Messina was relegated at the end of the 2005/06 season, but since Juventus Turin was relegated, Messina remained in Serie A.

In the 2006/07 season Messina could not manage to stay in the league despite three coach changes ( Bruno Giordano , Alberto Cavasin , again Bruno Giordano and Bruno Bolchi led the team through the season). On the last day of the match they were passed to the last place in the table.

Club crest until 2009 as FC Messina

The 2007/08 season could be concluded in the secured midfield of Serie B. However, on July 14, 2008, FC Messina withdrew its application for admission to Serie B for the coming season. After the previous owner, the company "Gruppo Franza", ended its commitment and no buyer was found for the club, the financial framework conditions for Serie B could no longer be met. Following the bankruptcy of the club in 2009 it was reestablished shortly afterwards and then in the fifth rate series D classified.

Derbies and fan friendships

Messina plays three derbies . In Sicily the derby di Sicilia will be held between Messina, US Palermo and Catania Calcio . The geographical proximity to the mainland also results in the derby dello Stretto against Reggina Calcio .

The fans of Messina share a friendship with Frosinone Calcio , Modena FC and Calcio Avellino SSD . However, there is rivalry with the fans of Reggina , Palermo , Catania and Salernitana Calcio .
