Gian Piero Ventura (also Giampiero Ventura ; born January 14, 1948 in Genoa ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

Career

As an active person

Ventura played for Sampdoria Genoa , but ended his career at the age of 25 due to a serious back injury.

As a trainer

Ventura was promoted to youth coach at Sampdoria Genoa in 1976 and even promoted to assistant coach three years later. In 1981 he became head coach at Ruentes Rapallo . Ventura then coached over 15 different Italian clubs. From July 1999 to June 2000 he returned to Sampdoria Genoa as head coach. From July 2011 to June 2016 he was the coach of the Italian first division club FC Turin . After the 2016 European Championship in France , Ventura took over the position of Italian national coach , initially for two years . After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup with the team , Ventura was dismissed from his post in November 2017. In October 2018 he took over the Italian first division team Chievo Verona as head coach, but the contract was terminated after five weeks. Ventura has been coaching the second division US Salernitana since the 2019/20 season .
