Udinese Calcio , Udinese for short , is an Italian football club founded in 1896 from the Friulian city of Udine . Other names are I Bianconeri ("The White and Black"), I Friulani ("The Friulians") or Le Zebrette ("The Little Zebras").

The home venue is the Dacia Arena (formerly: Stadio Friuli), which offers space for 25,144 spectators.

history

Udinese Calcio is registered as a SpA , a "Società per azioni", a joint stock company , which is common practice in Italian football . The Udinese Calcio association emerged from the Società Udinese di Ginnastica e Scherma . In 1896, at the first, then unofficial Italian championships, the Società Udinese di Ginnastica e Scherma won the title, which is not recognized because the championships were held by the Federazione di Ginnastica , the Italian gymnastics federation. It wasn't until 1898 that CFC Genoa won the first Italian championship .

So far, the club has barely achieved any great success, so winning the Mitropa Cup in 1980 is the most important title. In addition, Udinese has only won trophies and competitions in the youth sector or in lower-class leagues ( Serie B , Serie C ). Udinese Calcio caused a sensation in the 1980s when Franco Causio , who became world champion with Italy in 1982, and the Brazilian superstar Zico were signed up .

In 1986 the Italian entrepreneur family Pozzo took over the association. Since the 1995/96 season , Udinese has played continuously in Serie A and was able to qualify for the UEFA Cup regularly in the following years , even finishing third in the 1997/98 season . In the UEFA Cup, however, Udinese was mostly eliminated in qualifying for the group stage. Only in the 1999/2000 season could the club advance to the second round, where they failed against Slavia Prague due to the away goals rule.

Thanks to the fourth place in the table in the 2004/05 season , the club was allowed to qualify for the Champions League and made it into the UEFA Champions League for the first time with two wins against Sporting Lisbon . There Udinese failed in the group stage at FC Barcelona and Werder Bremen . You could, however, place yourself in front of Panathinaikos Athens . In the UEFA Cup , the end came in the round of 16 against Levski Sofia and in the league, Udinese only took a disappointing 13th place in the table.

The 2008/09 UEFA Cup season was more successful for Udinese Calcio, with the group stage finishing in first place ahead of Tottenham Hotspur , NEC Nijmegen , Spartak Moscow and Dinamo Zagreb . After Udinese had also prevailed against Lech Posen and Zenit Saint Petersburg , the club reached the quarter-finals of the competition, but where it failed at Werder Bremen .

The 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons were also very successful : With fourth and third place in the league, Udinese reached the play-offs of the Champions League, but narrowly failed to Arsenal London and Sporting Braga on penalties .
