Player career

Club career

Aldo Campatelli, born on April 7th 1919 in the northern Italian metropolis of Milan , learned to play football in the youth academy of Ambrosiana-Inter , one of the city's two main clubs. On November 22, 1936, the 17-year-old attacker finally made his debut in the first team Inters in the 1-0 success in Serie A against AC Turin . With the then Inter team for the world champions of 1934 or 1938 such as Giuseppe Meazza , Giovanni Ferrari or Pietro Ferraris , Aldo Campatelli won the title of Italian football champion in the 1937/38 season . They finished Serie A in first place with two points ahead of Juventus Turin . The defending champion had to give way to AGC Bologna the following year , but was able to bring Coppa Italia to Milan with a 2-1 final win over Novara Calcio . In 1939/40 it was that time again and Ambrosiana-Inter won the Italian football championship again after two years, after taking first place in Serie A with three points ahead of the defending champions from Bologna . While AC Turin then began to dominate football in Italy, this title win was the last for Aldo Campatelli with Ambrosiana-Inter. Campatelli played for the club until 1950, but could not win another title. In total, the striker made 297 league appearances in the Ambrosiana-Inter shirt and scored 39 goals during this time.

In the summer of 1950 Campatelli - now 31 years old - changed clubs for the first time and joined FC Bologna, where he played first-class football for three more years and made 46 league games with seven goals during this time. However, these years were also marked by Campatelli's increased bench press existence, who then ended his footballing career at the age of 34 after the end of the 1952/53 season.

National team

Between 1939 and 1950 Aldo Campatelli made seven appearances in the Italian national football team . National coach Ferruccio Novo , he was in the squad for the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil called. In the tournament, which was reigning world champions for Italy, the last world championship was in 1938 , with the end after the preliminary round, Campatelli was used in one game. Campatelli played in the first group game in the 3-2 loss to Sweden , while he missed the success against Paraguay in the final group game. The match against Sweden was also Aldo Campatelli's last of seven international matches that he had played in eleven years since 1939 without scoring.

Coaching career

After the end of his active football career, Aldo Campatelli became a coach. His first post in this function was from 1954 to 1955 at Lanerossi Vicenza . With the up-and-coming and financially supported club, the young trainer achieved first place in the series B in 1954/55 before AC Padova , which meant the rise to the top class. With this rise began the long first division period of Lanerossi Vicenza, which kept the club in Serie A for over two decades. After the rise with Lanerossi Vicenza, Aldo Campatelli succeeded Alfredo Foni at his old club Inter Milan, where he was only in office for twelve match days and was dismissed after a disappointing start to the season and replaced by club icon Giuseppe Meazza . In the course of the Serie A 1955/56 Campatelli then took over the coaching of the cheated Giuseppe Viani at FC Bologna and led the team to fifth place in the table. The following season Aldo Campatelli coached completely in Bologna and was again fifth in Serie A with his club. He then changed jobs again and was henceforth a new training provider at the second division club FC Modena . Here one reached the seventh place, which did not lead to an extension of the employment relationship.

From 1958 to 1960 Aldo Campatelli then led the fortunes of Inter Milan in a second term. A third and fourth place in two seasons did not convince the club superiors, however, Campatelli was dismissed in the course of the Serie A in 1959/60 and replaced by Giulio Cappelli . After a two-year hiatus as a coach, Campatelli coached ACD Rapallo Ruentes from 1962 to 1965 before returning to the coaching bench at Lanerossi Vicenza. Sixth place in Serie A 1965/66 was a respectable result, but coach and club parted ways at the end of the season. Rapallo Ruentes again briefly and from 1967 to 1969 an engagement at CFC Genoa , then Aldo Campatelli ended his career as a football coach.
