Ferruccio Novo (born March 22, 1897 in Turin , † April 8, 1974 in Laigueglia ) was an Italian football coach and functionary , who worked during his career as president of AC Torino and as coach of the Italian national football team .

Career

Ferrucio Novo began his career in 1939 when he was appointed president of AC Torino football club to succeed engineer Giovanni Battista Cuniberti . During his 14-year presidency at Torino , he built a competitive and nearly unbeatable team that became known as the Grande Torino due to its many successes . One of the most important commitments was winger Romeo Menti , whom he brought from AC Fiorentina in 1941 . He also signed defender Aldo Ballarin , midfielder Ezio Loik and attacker Valentino Mazzola .

That powerful team won the Italian championship five times in a row between 1943 and 1949. In 1949, in a plane crash that went down in history as the tragedy of Superga , this team was completely wiped out with the exception of three players who had not traveled with them.

During his time at Torino, Novo took over the Italian national team on February 27, 1949 , which he led to the 1950 World Cup . The team was automatically qualified for the tournament as defending champions. He called the goalkeeper Lucidio Sentimenti , defender Osvaldo Fattori , midfielders Carlo Annovazzi and Carlo Parola and striker Giampiero Boniperti to the squad .

The tournament was disappointing for Italy, the first game against Sweden ended in a defeat, the following victory over Paraguay did not bring the Italians to the next round, as the Swedes gained the point they needed to advance to the next round in the game against Paraguay . Novo was then removed from office.
