Tempe a Pailla
The Villa Tempe a Pailla was built in 1932 by the architect and designer Eileen Gray in Castellar ( Alpes-Maritimes department ), on a hill above the town of Menton . It was her second home on the Cote d'Azur .
Construction task and planning
Like Villa E.1027 , Tempe a Pailla is also reminiscent of the shape of a ship. The neighbors called the house "the submarine". Compared to E.1027, the architect's house is planned more minimalist but with no less ingenuity.
description
The living room and solarium face south, the bedrooms face east and the kitchen face north. The house is built on the rocks and rests on a base made of natural stones. A narrow band of windows separates the basement of natural stone masonry of the white cube of the main floor and the main floor consists of white-plastered masonry. The west facade borders a mule trail. Only a few round windows are let into the west wall for exposure. The rectangular solarium in front of the living room is shielded from the street by a floor-to-ceiling wall with a ribbon of windows closed by sliding shutters and a narrow canopy, which is supported by graceful round steel supports. The disposition of adjustable sliding shutters made of slats allow a view of the magnificent panorama of the Alps from Menton. A filigree two-flight concrete staircase connects the small rectangular terrace with the garden.
Monument value
Eileen Gray's home is one of the early twentieth century's most radical visions of minimalist elegance.
Trivia
The British painter Graham Sutherland bought the villa in 1955 and lived there until the end of his life in 1980. There is a memorial plaque for Sutherland on the house.
