E.1027 (also "Maison en Bord de Mer" ) is the name for the home of the Irish designer and architect Eileen Gray , which she planned together with the Romanian architect Jean Badovici . The architectural icon with the enigmatic name was built between 1926 and 1929 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera .

description

The name of the house is a numbers game . For the personal identification of the authors, he adds the initials of their names using a numeric key from the alphabet: E = Eileen, 10 = Jean, 2 = Badovici, 7 = Gray.

Eileen Gray bought two properties on the Riviera, one in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and the other in Castellar ( Tempe a Pailla , 1932). Here she built two houses for herself. Both houses are very original, carefully planned and intended for an open lifestyle. She began working on the Roquebrune plans in 1926 and the house was ready to move into in 1929. It was previously published in “ L'Architecture Vivante ” as “Maison en Bord de Mer”. Eileen Gray distances itself from the free floor plan in the sense of the time, which she herself describes as "camping style". Your house is more than a shell for a restrained, articulate lifestyle in which the interior is carefully planned and determined. The house represents an attempt to organize the individual rooms in such a way that each individual inhabitant of this house can withdraw at any time and find a peaceful corner to relax.

Le Corbusier had his summer cottage Le Cabanon in the immediate vicinity . Towards the end of the Second World War he painted five large murals in house E.1027 while Eileen Gray was absent and against her will.
