Ubaldo Righetti (born March 1, 1963 in Sermoneta ) is a former Italian football player who was active during his playing career for AS Roma , Udinese Calcio , US Lecce and Pescara Calcio . He also played eight games for the Italian national soccer team .

Ubaldo Righetti began his active career in adolescence with the US Latina and moved in 1980 to AS Roma , with whom he won the Italian cup competition, the Coppa Italia , in the 1980/81 season under head coach Nils Liedholm . After he completed only a few games in the first two years, he played in the 1982/83 season twelve league games and in the following year, the defender received 21 applications in the Serie A . In 1983 Righetti won his first Scudetto with the capital city and won the Italian cup competition in the 1983/84 and 1985/86 seasons. In the 1983/84 season, the defender with AS Roma also made it into the final of the European Cup , after IFK Gothenburg , CSKA Sofia , BFC Dynamo and Dundee United were defeated in four rounds .

The game against Liverpool ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. In the final penalty shootout, Ubaldo Righetti converted his penalty, but on the Roman side Bruno Conti and Francesco Graziani missed their attempts, while with the English only Steve Nicol failed and Liverpool won the trophy. In 1984 the trade magazine Il Guerin Sportivo awarded him the Trofeo Bravo as the best young player in Europe . In the summer of 1987 he moved to Udinese Calcio for a year , where he was able to establish himself as a regular player. Nevertheless, Righetti left the club a year later and joined the US Lecce . The defensive player was also part of the regular squad in Lecce and played for the club for two years.

In July 1990 he decided to sign with the second division club Pescara Calcio . With the Biancoazzurri he placed in his first season on the moderate 13th place in the Serie B , a year later followed as second place the promotion to the top division. After just one season in Serie A, he rose again with the club as bottom of the table. In the following years Righetti occupied with Pescara moderate middle field in Serie B and successfully secured relegation. In 1995 he ended his active career.

National team

Righetti was appointed in 1982 by Azeglio Vicini for the first time in the squad of the Italian U-21 selection , for which he made his debut on October 27, 1982 in the game against Romania. The defender was appointed to the Italian national team for the first time by coach Enzo Bearzot in November 1983 . He made his debut on November 16, 1983 in the match against Czechoslovakia , the Italians lost the game 2-0. In total, he made eight games for Italy, his last appearance on June 2, 1985 against Mexico ended in a 1-1 draw.
