Francesco "Ciccio" Graziani (born December 16, 1952 in Subiaco , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and coach .

Player career

Center forward Francesco Graziani began his career at AC Arezzo and moved to the Italian Serie A in 1973 with Torino Calcio . Here he became an Italian national team player and took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . However, he was overshadowed by goal-scorer Paolo Rossi from the start of his national team career . Graziani, who had a strong header, was mainly used as a joker and only made three short appearances at the 1978 World Cup. With Torino he had his best years between 1975 and 1977 when he was first Italian champion and 1977 runner-up behind local rivals Juventus Turin . In 1977 he was also top scorer in Serie A. In a total of 353 league games, he scored 131 goals. Graziani missed the greatest success at club level in the final in the European Cup in 1984. He lost to Liverpool 3: 5 on penalties against Liverpool . Graziani also missed a penalty in the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

Graziani was also in the Italian squad for the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy. In 1981 he moved from Turin to Fiorentina , where he played with midfield director Giancarlo Antognoni . His strike partners here were the Argentine world champion from 1978 Daniel Bertoni and the young Daniele Massaro . National coach Enzo Bearzot called him back to the Italian squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain and this time relied on a double top with Rossi and Graziani as strike partners. The preliminary round, however, was a complete disappointment. Italy drew only three times, with Graziani taking the 1-0 opening goal with a header in the final group game against Cameroon .

Italy qualified for the second round of the finals, but improved with victories over favorites Argentina and Brazil and finally became world champions again in the final against Germany for the first time since 1938 . Graziani was on the field from the start in all Italian games, but the star of the team was again Rossi, who was the top scorer of the World Cup. Graziani injured himself in the final of all things and was replaced after seven minutes by Alessandro Altobelli , who finally scored the 3-0 opening goal in the 81st minute. Graziani made 64 appearances for Italy and scored 23 goals.

After completing his national team career , Graziani moved from Florence to AS Roma in 1983 and to Udinese Calcio in 1986 , where he played for two years and ended his career a year later with the APIA Leichhardt Tigers in Australia .

Coaching career

Graziani struck after his retirement as an active player a career as a club coach and during the 1989/90 season he was head coach at Fiorentina . After a season that ended in 12th place in Serie A, he had to vacate his post and a short time later got the job at the second division Reggina Calcio , where he worked again as a coach. In the same season he was dismissed and his engagement with US Avellino was not very successful and Graziani held less than a season in office. Shortly before the end of the 1991/92 season , the employment relationship with the second division Avellino was terminated and Graziani took a break from the coaching business.

For the 2000/01 season he took a job at the third division AS Viterbese Calcio and led the club to maintain the league in the C1 series . For the next season he went to the then league competitor Catania Calcio , which was also located in the third highest division. In his debut season he led the Sicilians to promotion to Serie B , but after an unsatisfactory start to the 2002/03 season he was fired. Graziani found a job with the fourth division club Montevarchi Calcio Aquila in 1902 , which he could not lead on the road to success and during the 2003/04 season he had to leave the club. From 2004 to 2006, the Italian followed a commitment at AS Cervia , which he led from sixth-rate Eccellenza to promotion to Serie D and ended the 2005/06 season in fifth place.
