Gabriele Oriali (born November 25, 1952 in Como , Italy ) is a former Italian professional footballer .

As a club player, "Die Lunge" played for Inter Milan for 13 years and won the world championship title with the national team in 1982 .

Club career

The boy from Como joined the youth department of Inter Milan at the age of 14 , which at the time was considered one of the best club teams in Europe. In 1970 Oriali moved up to the professional team, where he played in midfield with stars like Sandro Mazzola and Luis Suárez . He became champions in his first season, but only played two games.

Then he developed into the regular player of the "Nerazzurri" . Oriali was versatile: mostly playing in the defensive midfield , but he also helped out as a man hit or even a libero . He was soon one of the top performers at Internazionale, even if he wasn't the glamorous star or flashy technician. Oriali lived from strength in combat and his readiness for action. One of his strengths was his ability to destroy the opponent's game and to keep the playmaker's back free. In 1980 Oriali was finally able to celebrate a Scudetto again after nine years .

After 13 years in the blue and black jersey, Oriali turned his back on Milan and played for four years for Fiorentina , where he ended his career in 1987 at the age of 34.

Career in the national team

After the 1978 World Cup, Oriali moved up in the national team and made his debut on December 21, 1978 in a friendly against Spain (1-0). After his second Scudetto, national coach Enzo Bearzot appointed him to the EURO 1980 squad .

Two years later he was part of the squad for the 1982 World Cup in Spain . After two weak games in the preliminary round, Oriali played his way into the regular formation with the third game against Cameroon , in which he stayed until the final. Italy defeated Germany 3-1 and became world champions for the third time. He played his last game for the Squadra Azzurra on May 29, 1983 against Sweden in Gothenburg (0-2).

Subsequent career

From 1999 to 2010, Gabriele Oriali was a board member at Inter Milan and, as sports director, was responsible for the club's transfers.
