Giovanni Galli (born April 29, 1958 in Pisa , Italy ) is a former Italian football player . He played in the position of goalkeeper .
Career
Galli began his career with the 1977/78 season in Serie A at Fiorentina . In Florence he played a total of nine seasons in a relatively unsuccessful era for the club. In total, he was used 259 times at AC Florence.
For the 1986/87 season Galli moved to AC Milan , where he achieved the greatest successes of his career in their then exceptional team under Arrigo Sacchi . In the following season he was Italian champion with Milan and won the Italian Supercup . The highlight was the following season 1988/89, in which he won the Italian Supercup, the European Cup of National Champions , the European Supercup and the World Cup with the club in just one season . In the following season, his last with Milan, he won the national championship and the world cup again.
Giovanni Galli then moved to SSC Napoli for the 1990/91 season , where he again won the Supercoppa Italiana (5-1 against Juventus Turin ) in the same season under Alberto Bigon . Galli stayed two more, relatively unsuccessful seasons with Napoli. The 1993/94 season saw him then at Torino Calcio , but the next year he moved to AC Parma for two seasons , but where he was no longer a regular place under behind Luca Bucci was substitute goalkeeper. To the obtained finals of the UEFA Cup in 1994/95 he was not actively involved and in the 1995/96 season he was at Lucchese in the Serie B on loan. His active career ended there at the end of the season.
Galli was used 19 times in the Italian national team . He belonged to the world champion squad Enzo Bearzots from 1982 , but was not used at the World Cup. Before and during the 1986 World Cup , he fought a bitter power struggle for the position of first goalkeeper with Franco Tancredi . In the opinion of the former, then third Italian national goalkeeper, Walter Zenga, this power struggle contributed significantly to the weakening of the Squadra Azzurra and their premature departure.
His son Niccolò (* 1983) was also a soccer player; he died in a traffic accident in 2001 at the age of 17.
