John Braine

John Gerard Braine (born April 13, 1922 in Bradford , England , † October 28, 1986 in London , England) was a British author, best known for his novel The Way Up .

Life

John Braine left St. Bede's Grammar School at 16 and worked in a shop, laboratory, and factory before becoming a librarian after World War II . He had previously finished school at the age of 22.

With his first novel, Room at the Top , he hit the bull's eye in 1957. It was translated by Herbert Schlueter in 1957 and initially appeared under the title ... and would harm his soul . It has been known as The Way Up since the 1960s ; at the same time with the German title of the film , directed by Jack Clayton and Laurence Harvey took over the leading role.

After the success of his debut novel, Braine gave up his job as a librarian and worked as a freelance writer, although The Way Up remained his best-known book. Among other things, the sequel Life at the Top ( A man of society ) appeared in 1962 .

Braine is commonly associated with the Angry Young Men movement .
