Karl-Heinz Stoll (English studies)

Karl-Heinz Stoll (born October 1, 1942 in Neunkirchen ) is a German linguist and translation scholar, English and literary scholar who teaches as a retired university professor at the Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germersheim .

Life

After studying English, American and German at the Universities of Saarbrücken, London and Bristol 1961–1967, he passed his state examination in English and German at the University of Saarbrücken. This was followed by two years of teaching as a visiting instructor and assistant professor at Loras College, Iowa and Youngstown State University , Ohio, which was followed by a doctorate in 1970 with the thesis on Theodore Dreiser's novels "Sister Carrie", "Jennie Gerhardt" and " An American Tragedy " to the Dr. phil. in American Studies at Saarbrücken University. He then worked, interrupted by a visiting professorship at Youngstown State University in 1971, in the Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (until 1992 Department of Applied Linguistics; until 2009 Department of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in Germersheim as a scientific researcher Assistant and assistant professor, whereupon the habilitation in 1975 with the font Harold Pinter. A contribution to the typology of the new English drama and the award of the Venia Legendi for English Philology followed. In 1978 Karl-Heinz Stoll was appointed professor for life at the University of Mainz. In addition to his work at the University of Mainz, he was a Fulbright Professor at the University of North Carolina in 1980 , a visiting professor at the Institute for Translation and Interpreting (IÜD) at Heidelberg University in 1983 and a visiting professor at Stellenbosch University in 2003 and at the University of Auckland in 2007 true. In 2009 he worked as an evaluator at the universities in Tartu and Tallinn . Karl-Heinz Stoll's research and teaching focus on English linguistics and translation studies, translator training, Anglophone African literature and contemporary English theater.
