Franco Tancredi (born January 10, 1955 in Giulianova , Province of Teramo , Italy ) is a goalkeeping coach and former Italian football goalkeeper .
Life
Tancredi began his career at his home club Giulianova Calcio and moved to AC Milan in 1974 , but never appeared in Serie A for Milan. After a season at Rimini Calcio , he moved to AS Roma in 1977 , where he stood between the posts in Serie A 282 times until 1990. In the 1982/83 season Tancredi won the Scudetto , the Italian championship, with Roma . He also won the Coppa Italia four times with AS Roma . After the 1990/91 season, where he was used six times for AC Turin , he ended his active career.
For the Italian national soccer team he came to twelve missions between 1984 and 1986. He was substitute goalkeeper behind Giovanni Galli at the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 , but remained without a commitment at his only World Cup. Before and during the World Cup, he fought a bitter power struggle for the position of first goalkeeper with Giovanni Galli. In the opinion of the former, then third Italian national goalkeeper, Walter Zenga, this power struggle contributed significantly to the weakening of the Squadra Azzurra and their premature departure.
Franco Tancredi also took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles as the goalkeeper of the Italian Olympic team. In 1987 he lost consciousness during a league game against AC Milan in San Siro when a Milan fan threw fireworks. The doctors found that she had stopped breathing. Tancredi could still be reanimated in the stadium and survived.
After his active career, he became goalkeeping coach at AS Roma in 1992. In 2004 he followed the then Roma coach Fabio Capello to Juventus Turin . He then worked for Real Madrid in 2006/07 and from 2007 to 2012 for the English national football team with Capello. As a goalkeeping coach, he took part in the 2010 World Cup for England . After they parted ways in between, Capello and Tancredi have been reunited since 2017: at Jiangsu Suning , who plays in the Chinese Super League in China .
